LIVE STOCK EMBARGO
Remit Opposing Removal Rejected Five minutes were sufficient for the disposal by the annual conference of the Royal Agricultural Society yesterday of a remit from the Flaxbourne A. and r. Association asking the conference to express strong opposition to the proposed lifting of the embargo ou the importation of live stock from Great Britain. The remit, which was rejected almost unanimously, was reached ten minutes before the tea adjournment hour at 5.30. A long debate had been anticipated and loud laughter greeted the suggestion of the president, Mr. L. J. Wild, that the conference should deal with, the remit before the adjournment. “No discussion here is going to change anyone’s opinion, and I think we might get to a vote without delay,” he said. “If any delegate wishes to discuss the remit, however, I cannot prevent him from doing so.” The remit was moved by Mr. L. Crispin, of Ward, on behalf of the Marlborough Association. He said it seemed that they were on tlie eve of some change and that everyone interested in the importation of live stock should discuss the matter. ■
Mr. G. P. Gainsford, of Seddon, seconded the remit.
“It is quite definite that the importers of live stock have no more chance of bringing foot-and-mouth disease here than frying snowballs in hell,” said Mr. L. Maclean.
There was a loud chorus of “Noes” against the remit, when it was put to the conference by the president. “There is no doubt about your opinion on that question,” he said.
