SOLDIERS’ CHILDREN
Scope of Trentham Scholarships By adopting a remit asking for the inclusion of children born before July 1, 1921, instead of July 1, 1920, among those eligible for Trentham Scholarships which provide for the secondary education of children of soldiers killed or disabled in the war, the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association yesterday sought the widening of the scope of tlie fund. Mr. D. McMahon (Te Arolia), who moved that children born up to July 1, 1921, should be included under the fund, suggested asking the Unemployment Board for assistance for the fund. Even if the money had to lie taken from the canteen funds it could not be put to better use.
The Hon. W. Perry said he had found that representations were - made to the trustees of the fund after the last conference but were turned down. The original rules had been altered to bring children born up to July 1, 1920, under tlie fund, and that alteration had shortened tlie life of the fund. Any extension would further shorten the life Of the fund and reduce the amounts available for the scholars. Mr. W. E. Leadley (Christchurch) asked if headquarters would investigate tlie possibility of reimbursing Hie fund with money raised by an art union or other means. Mr. Perry: Witli pleasure.
Mr. McMahon’s motion was carried. It was agreed that the Minister of Education should be asked to reinstate, in approved cases, the privilege previously given to returned soldiers of receiving vocational training at technical schools.
