Reports From the Province PORANGAHAU MEETING The monthly meeting of the I’orangahau Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs. Thomas .Hobson. Mrs. Cameron was appointed to represent the institute at the Dominion conference, to be held in Auckland in July. Competitions held during the month resulted as follow: — Best plate shortbread: Mrs. Ward 1, Mrs. Hobson 2, Mrs. Black 3. Best embroidered toilet set: Mrs. Green 1, Miss White 2, Mrs. Forest 3. Best made coloured apron: Miss White 1. Mrs. O’Connor 2, Miss Black 3. Alicetown. The second birthday of the Alicetown Women’s Institute was held recently. Mrs. Cox presiding. Visitors were welcomed from local women’s institutes, including Miss Maddever, president of the Southern Wellington Federation of Women’s Institutes. Two other welcome visitors were Mrs. Andrews, mayoress of Lower Hutt, and Mrs. W. Nash, patron of the club. The Glee Singers gave two items en-

titled “In this Hour,” and “In an Old Cottage Garden.” Competitions were won by Mesdames Fisher and Bathurst, the prizes being given by Mesdamee Duncan and Fermoson. The Dramatic Club gave two amusing sketches during the afternoon. A presentation was made to Miss Duncan in appreciation of her services to the Dramatic Club. Afternoon tea was served, when the two-tier birthday cake, the ingredients of which were supplied by Mrs. Fermoson, and which was made and iced by Mr. Naismith, was cut by Mrs. Nash and Mrs. Andrews. Posies made by Mrs. Marshall, Petone, were presented to Mrs. W. NasE, Mrs. Andrews, Miss Maddever, Mrs. Gibson Young and the president. A bronze bell was presented to the club by Mrs. Olsen to be used at the club meetings. The president expressed her thanks to Mrs. Oisen on behalf of the members. Kopuaranga. The June meeting of the Kapuaranga Women’s Institute was held in the hall, and was well attended. Keen interest was displayed in the demonstration of uoholstering, which was given by Mrs. iT. Welch, Fernridge. A vote of thanks was accorded her. A competition for plain scones was won by Mrs. T. O’Shea, senior class, and Miss L. Westhead, junior class. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. A. B. Cottle, Mrs. Fenemer and Mrs. Moss. Carterton. The monthly meeting of the “Marigold” Institute was held in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, when Mrs. Gibb Johnson consented to attend the Dominion conference as delegate. ■ It was reported that, as a result of the request for 3d per member for the City Mission Appeal, made at the previous meeting, £l/4/--had been forwarded to the Rev. Fielden Taylor. During the afternoon a demonstration on pattern drafting was given by Miss Hill. Mrs. Gibson Young, of the South Wellington Institute, gave an interesting talk on the manners and customs of the Burmese people. Pioneer Club. The monthly meeting of the Pioneer Club Women’s Institute Centre was well attended, and Mrs. W. J. Ross, president, on behalf of centre members, welcomed all the visitors. Mrs. Ross introduced Miss Carswell, who gave a lecture demonstration on the art of mime, with Miss Moncrief playing for her. Mrs. Alex. Mitchell gave much pleasure by singing two songs, Miss Nora Grey playing the accompaniments. Afternoon tea was served, and a social half hour, with discussion of institute activities, completed the afternoon. Oliariu. The June meeting of the Ohariu W.I. held in the local hall was presided over by Mrs. Best. An instructive demonstration on the making of quilts was given by Mrs. Brown. The competitions were “Limerick’’ on the Institute” and “Something from Old Tins,” Mesdames Bruce, Bryant. Miss Hume and Mrs. Reher being the winners. The roll-call, “Where I would like to spend a holiday and why,” described many excellent holiday resorts. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames A. Best, Reher, Jacobsen. Miss Jacobsen. Pangaroa. The Pongaroa Women’s Institute met recently with a good attendance. Mrs. Tinworth’s entry, three artistic candietdicks, were the winning one in tlie competition, “Something Novel from Something Old,” and Mesdames R. Welch and Jensen tied for the points prize. Mrs. Doug. McDonald exhibited samples of home-made plasticine. A silver-coin collection for a distressed family realised 17/9 and a bring-and-buy stall was held. The hostesses for the meeting were Mcsdames P. Kent and Wiltshire. Silverstreain. Mrs. Spackman presided over a large attendance at the Silverstream Women’s Institute recently, and welcomed several visitors from other districts. Miss Maddever delighted her listeners with a very humorous and clever word picture of her trip to England. Mrs. Spackman presented the guest of honour with a posy of violets and daphne. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Castle, Balfour. Pierard, Buekwell and Keath. The competition was won by Mrs.

.Spaeknian for “the best flower in my garden.” A display of old treasures claimed much attention,. some very beautiful antiques, embroideries, etc., being on view. Piriuoa. The monthly meeting of the newlyformed Piriuoa Women’s Institute was held in the hall recently, there being a very good attendance. The president. Miss Hanlon, was in' the chair. Several new members were welcomed. Arrangements for a ball were discussed tit some length, the date being fixed for .lune 26. A competition, the best article made from a flour bag, was won by Mrs. D. Mclntosh. A demonstration, of the making of seagrass stools was given by Miss Smart. Carterton. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Gaudiu, Taurau, Lovegrove, and Sutton. \V:iiuui-o-Mata. Au interesting meeting was held at the Wainui-o-Mata iustitute recently. Mrs. White presided over a good attendance. Two demonstrations were given, one on smocking by Mrs. Burrows, who showed very dainty samples of work, and one on glove-making by Mrs. Leu Wood. The drama circle members gave an amusing play, entitled “Breakfast for Two.” A competition caused great amusement. Mrs. E. Dick gained the first prize, and Mrs. Mason second. The hostesses were Mesdames White, Len Wood, and F. O. Wood. Sprays of flowers were presented to the demonstrator, the drama circle members, and a visitor from Lower Hutt. Otaki. The June meeting of the Otaki Women’s Institute was held in the Cosy Sample Rooms. Mrs. Synnott presiding. Three new members were welcomed, and Mrs. Wood was congratulated on her ajr pointment us convenor of the Kapiti group. Arrangements were made for attending the School of Drama at Plimmer-

ton. and the annual conference at Auckland. A gardening circle and an arts and crafts circle were formed. A knitting competition resulted in Miss Manz being first, and Mrs. D. Wilson second. Mrs. Hol'beck demonstrated, re-covering umbrellas. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames H. Taylor, F. .Southgate, Rule, Morgan’, -Stevens, Wells, and Housea-ux. Waituna West. A very pleasant afternoon was spent by the Waituna West Women’s Institute at. their monthly meeting. Miss Grant, president of the northern federation, was present and gave an interesting talk on institute affairs. Mrs. J. H. Williamson, president, was in the chair. The monthly competition, an article made from a yard of cretonne, not costing more than 3/when finished, was won by Mrs. Petersen, Mrs. Wevell second, Mrs. Stokes third. A vote of thanks was passed to Miss Grant. Mrs. A. E. Pearce presenting her with a shoulder spray. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Shannon, Meades, Stokes and Johnson. Ilukanui. The usual monthly meeting of -the Hukanui Women’s Institute was held in the hall, when Mrs. Watkins presided over a good attendance of members and friends. The delegates to the council meeting at

Carterton presented their reports, for which they were accorded a vote of thanks. It was decided not to send a delegate to the conference at Auckland. A demonstration was given by Mrs. Adkins, Wellington, on quilting. The competition was the “Best Article from Old Felt Hats,” and was won by Mrs. R. Cooper, with Miss B. Harrington second and Mrs. Lawrence third. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Lemberg, Mooney and D. Mabey, after which Miss Booth conducted folk dancing. This will be a regular item during the winter months. Martinborough. tn spite of heavy rain some 40 members gathered recently for the usual monthly meeting of the Martinborough Women’s Institute. Mrs. A. Hardie presided and one new member was elected. After some discussion it was decided to form a glee club, the secretary to call a further meeting at an early date. Two delegates, Mesdames Caseley and 'Beveridge, attended the annual meeting of the Bush-Wairarapa federation. Mrs. Caseley presented a report of the proceedings there and was ac-eorded a vote of thanks by the meeting. Mrs. Willis assisted by Mrs. Nicol gave an instructive demonstration on the makin gof soft toys, of which many excellent specimens were on view. Tiwangaarere. At the June meeting of the Turangaarere Women’s Institute members assembled to celebrate its first birthday, visitors coming from Raetihi. Entertainments took the form of community singing and A throw-over and tea cosy beautifully worked with the institute's monogram were presented to the -institute by Mrs. Bartell and Miss Bartell. A birthday cake made by Mrs. R. Sinclair and iced by Mrs. Stevens, Rata, was cut up by the president, Mrs. Bartell. Mesdames Canton and Thorpe won the competition for a thrift article. Tne hostesses for the day were Mesdames Brophy aud Perry and Miss Eagan. Mangaweka. The June meeting of the Mangaweka institute was well attended, several visitors from Pukiore were welcomed. A short play was received from the institute’s English link, also a newspaper cutting in which Mangaweka Women’s Institute was mentioned. It was suggested that members’ children get in touch with link members’ children. The top weights in the potato competitions were grown by Mrs. C. Reiley, Mrs. Ginnane, and Mrs. Guthrie. The demonstration consisted of a display of electrical appliances. Members were greatly interested in the cooking. The entries for the competitions were very poor. The results were:—Soft toys: Mrs. Jarrett 1, Miss M. Gard’ner 2, Mrs. Gard’ner 3 Toffee: Miss M. Dickinson 1, Mrs. Gard’ner 2, Miss M. Gard’ner 3. The hostesses were Mrs. Cherry, Misses Zohs, Betty Bailey, and Betty Weston. The helpers for the next six months will be Misses Eunice Noble, Frances Johnsen, Peggy Rodewal, and Betty Smith.
