Wellington District Commission TWO APPOINTMENTS \ Harbour Board Chairman Included It was announced by the Minister of Justice, Hon. J. G. Cobbe, yesterday afternoon that the following appointments had been made to the Wellington District Mortgagors Relief Commission :— Mr. Thomas Robert Barrer, sheepfarmer, of Miisterton, and chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board. Mr, George Herbert Harper, retired barrister and farmer, of Te Horo. The third member, who has been reappointed, is Mr. Kenneth Waring Dalrymple, sheep and dairyfarmer, of Waitatapia, Bulls. The two new members replace Mr. Hugh Mclntyre, of Feikling, who was chairman of; the commission, and Mr. Albert McDonald, of Masterton, They resigned some weeks ago, because, it has been reported, of dissatisfaction
with new arrangements made by the Government recording the secretaryship of the commission.
The Minister said yesterday that the reconstituted commission would begin work forthwith on arrears of applications, which bad been fairly numerous. The new members were experienced farmers and business men with a thorough knowledge of the conditions, difficulties and needs of farmers throughout the district. Together with Mr. Dalrymple, they provided almost a perfect geographical representation covering the centre and extreme ends of the district.
The secretary of the commission is Mr. G. Baker, formerly of the Palmerston North Court staff.
Biographical Notes
Mr. Thomas R. Barrer is owner of Lowlands station, near Masterton. In addition to being a member and now chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, he has had a wide experience of administrative work on various associations, having been an executive member of the Wairarapa Farmers’ Union, and the Marine Engineers’ Institute, and a member of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Federation and the New Zealand Farmers’_ Union. He was born at Fermoy, Ireland, in 1873, but came to New Zealand at an early age, serving bis apprenticeship as an engineer at Auckland. Mr. George 11. Harper is the eldest of the seven sons of Mr, George Harper, 0.8. E.. a veteran citizen of Christchurch. Like his father the new member of the Wellington Mortgagors Commission took up law as a profession and practised for many years at Otaki, where, for some time more recently be was acting coroner. He retired from legal practice and purchased a farm at To Horo. He is a firstgrade interpreter of the Maori language, and is well-known and esteemed in the district for his judicial mind and thorough knowledge of law and farming, particularly dairying.
