Contest Between Rival Labour Groups (Received June 2. 11.35 p.m.) Sydney, June 2. Unusual interest was evinced in the by-election on Saturday for the Newcastle Federal sent rendered vacant by the death of Mr. David Watkins owing to the candidature of the rival Labour parties, namely, Mr. D. O. Watkins, Federal Labourite and son of the former member, and Mr. J. E. Smith, the nominee of the State Labour Party led by Mr. Lang. A third candidate w;ts n Dougins Credit Ito. Mr II Sykrs. The latest returns indicate that although flic margin between Messrs. Watkins and Smith is at. present narrow Mr. Watkins is expected to win.
