RUGBY LEAGUE

Walmsley Shield Match ST. GEORGE AND CENTRAL The first Rugby League games in the Walmsley Shield series were played on Saturday. At the Bhowgi'ounds the encounter between Bt. George and Central was somewhat disappointing, though both teams fielded some of the best talent seen in the game in Wellington for many years. Most of the players were playing together for the first time, and that probably accounted for the lack of combination. At Randwick the local team met Petone. In the St. George-Central game both teams filed out with two very solid packs, but St. George had a big advantage in the hooking department, and this fact undoubtedly won the game for them. Xu the early stages Central had the advantage, the first try coming as the result of a brilliant run by Walker, which enabled .Swanston to cross the line. O’Hallorau missed with the kick. Central continued to have the better of it, Elliott putting in a dashing run to ground the ball wide out, but the kick again went astray. Holmes put Central once more on the attack, but the other backs were badly out of position when it came to finishing off the movement. OTlnllornn was almost over, but Moiseley saved by a good run, Fuller picking up to score. The score at half-time was Central 6, St. George 3. In the second half St. George showed altogether much better combination, though there was little difference in the two teams, but the superior weight, of the St, George pack began to tell. Fuller and Olsen were prominent, the latter adding a try for St. George. The Central backs provided a bright interlude, and the greens took the lead again with a 'penalty kick by Foster. St. George, however, were seeing it out better, and tries were scored by Moiseley and Chalmers the former’s being the result of a splendid solo effort. Ward converted both. The game ended: St. George 16, Central 8. Mr. W. Desmond, of Christchurch, was the referee.
