WEATHER DURING MAY

Cold Conditions Prevail FIRST FROST THIS YEAR After six successive months in which temperatures were above normal, there was a definite change in May, as is shown by the Meteorological Office’s records for the past month. Although there were several periods of mild weather, the greater part of the month was extremely cold, with strong southerly winds prevailing. These changes were reflected in the temperatures. The maximum mean temperature for May was 55.6 degrees, the average maximum mean temperature for May being 57.4 degrees. The minimum mean temperature was 45.4 degrees, as against the usual average for May of 46.4 degrees; The approximate mean temperature for the month was thus 50.5 degrees, which is 1.4 degrees below the normal for May.

The highest maximum temperature recorded during the month was 63.7 degrees, on May 14. The lowest minimum temperature, which occurred on May 26, was 37.3 degrees. The average minimum grass temperature was 41.6 degrees, this being 1.1 degrees above the normal for May. The coldest grass temperature, which was recorded on. the night of May 25, was 27.1 degrees. This was the first frost this year.

The rainfall measured at Kelburn during May was 3.5 inches, which is 17 per cent, below the average May rainfall. Rain fell on 19 days, however, whereas the average for May is only 17. The greatest fall on any one day was .61 of an inch, which fell on May 22. . May enjoyed 137.4 hours of bright sunshine, which is seven hours-above the average. It was a windier May than usual, the daily run of wind averaging 255 instead of 219. The windiest 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. on May 22, when 511 miles were recorded during a north-easterly blow. There were two days of gales, both from, the south, these happening on the night- of May 22 and the morning of May 23. A few flakes of snow fell on Muy 22. Duping the morning of May 21 there was a severe thunderstorm, accompanied by heavy hail and rain, and hail fell also on May 5 and May 22. Thick fog enveloped the city nearly all day on May 29. '
