In a preliminary match to next week’s All Black trial, Hawke’s Bay to-day defeated Bush by 34 points to 16. At halftime the score favoured Hawke’s Bay by 26 points to 6. Hawke’s Bay scored with surprising rapidity in the first half, when they had the assistance of a fairly strong breeze, and frequently started off movements in their own twenty-five from the kick off which elided with tries. Bush
rallied toward the end of the spell and scored two unconverted tries. The story was different in the second half, when Bush, winning a good proportion of the scrums and lineouts, kept the Hawke’s Bay enterprise in check aud more often than not were on the attack. Scorers for Hawke’s Bay were Apsey (3), Tremcwan (2), Le Quesne, Hannigan and Donovan (tries), and Bradley (five conversions) ; for Bush, Harvey, Mitchell, Harris, McSherry (trie* 9 ) and R. Mills (one conversion).
