FAMOUS CONDUCTOR

Reinstatement in Germany London, April 17. Dr. Furtwaengler, the famous German conductor, who was compelled by differences of opinion with the Nazi authorities to resign last December frm his post as leader of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and director of the Prussian State Opera House, has been reinstated. He is to conduct the Philharmonic Orchestra next week.

Dr. Furtwangler was reported in December to have unforgivably offended the Nazi authorities by conducting the first performance of Herr Paul Hindemith's “Mathis the Painter,” Hindemith having been attacked for his association with Jews. It was argued that Dr. F.urtwangler’s spirited defence of Hindemiths artistry showed that he did not sympathise with the Nazi struggle.
