Tlie work will start at the south end of the Muritai beach and will extend a distance of 1200 feet to Heketara Street. Approximately £2BOO will be spent on the job, and it is considered that that sum will be sufficient to get well past the danger point of erosion. All the labour will be drawn from the Eastbourne unemployment register. About 25 men will be required, and they will be paid on the Public Works rates of pay. and will work a 47-hour week. The time tbe work will take, will, of course, depend on the weather conditions. Mr. AVise said it was unfortunate tlia.t a start was not made during the summer, but he explained that the arranging of tbe finance and other negotiations took considerable time. The securing of the rock and the cartage was to be done by contract, and in that connection tenders were now being called. ; Mr. Wise added that the ratepayers would not be called on to bear any additional burden for the job. - LAWN TENNIS Tourney on Saturday The Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Subassociation will conduct its anniversary singles tourney commencing at 10 a.tn. on Saturday. CASE DISMISSED Negligent Driving Charge Arising out of an accident on the Hurt Road on March 12, when a motor-car collided with a cyclist, who had to be taken to hospital, Donald McLeod appeared in the Petone court yesterday charged w’ith negligent driving, but Jhe case was dismissed by Sir. AV. F. Stilwell, S.M., who'said the driver seemed to have acted in a fairly reasonable sort or manner. The magistrate said_ it was rather difficult to comprehend in detail the circumstances of such happenings. Evidence revealed that defendant, who ■was represented by Mr. M. O. Barnett, ivas proceeding alojtg the Hutt Road toward Wellington, when William John Mulgrew wheeled his bicycle across the road toward the cycle track. Defendant told the court, and his remarks were substantiated by a passenger, that Mulgrew hesitated- when the car’s horn was sounded, and witness steered to the left to pass him.', Mulgrew. however, then ran toward the cycle track, and the driver pulled farther to the left in an effort to avoid him; In trying to do so he ran on to the track and struck Mulgrew. Counsel contended that the only fact established by the police evidence was that tbe cyclist took his life into his own hands in crossing the road as he had done and was .lucky to be in court that day. He was looking for trouble, and the accident was entirely due to his carelessness. “My impression was that it was more like a'ease of suicide than anything I havg ever seen,” stated the passenger in the car. Charle_s Howard Griffen, a company manager, of Nelson.

It is announced that Mr. A. P. Godber, Whiteman’s Valley Road, Silverstream, will be a council candidate for the west ward of the borough of Upper Hutt at the elections. Mr. Godber is a retired civil servant.
