COUNCIL’S SUPPORT

Extension of New Road to Paekakariki Support for the proposal to extend the new road to Plimmerton as far as Paekakariki was given by the Makara County Council yesterday following a letter from the PlimmertonPaekakariki Main Highways Deviation Association. After protesting against the Paekakariki hill climb, the association referred to the .scheme for the erection of a traffic, bridge up to highway standard over the Paremata waterway, and expressed the opinion that the argument in favour of a further extension of the new road to Paekakarika was overwhelming. The association had been formed to give the project a suitable channel by which it could receive public notice. “Personally, I view the proposal as quite a good scheme to put the unemployed on,” said the chairman, Mr. RW. Bothamley. “The road must come eventually.” Cr. E. Windley said he had put the scheme before the public as a national benefit about four years ago.. It had seemed a very suitable job for the unemployed at that time, and it was a great pitv it had not been completed under that scheme. For some reason no public body was sufficiently interested to push the matter forward. “The proposal is very desirable, and it will be of great benefit to the North Island.” said Councillor Windley, in moving that the council support the scheme.
