WHY CREATURES NEED EYELIDS

Eyelids are for the protection of the eyes. When danger threatens, as, for example, when a cloud of smoke or a mass of dust approaches, the eyelids close and protect the eye.

All creatures do not possess eyelids Fishes, for example, do not need lids. Living in the water they are saved from the danger of dust and suchlike annoyances. On the other hand, snakes have their eyelids permanently closed.

As they are transparent, however, this does not matter. The reptiles are thus able to crawl through the undergrowth without their eyes becoming damaged. Birds have throe eyelids. There is the ordinary pair' consisting of a lid top and bottom, and then there is another single eyelid that passes over the eyeball from the inner corner under the ordinary eyelids. Even iu human beings we can see on the inner side of the eye a reddish fold, which is the remains of the third eyelid which is found in birds and many reptiles.
