TARANAKI FIELDS

Prospects for To-day BRILLIANT SPRINTERS * ENGAGED (By “The Watcher.”) The Taranaki Jockey Club received an excellent response from owners for the special meeting to be held at New Plymouth to-day. The fields are mainly confined to local horses, and there are several engaged in more than one race, but there is material for good racing. In view ot the Easter meetings the form will be of interest. The truck is in good order, and the . win and place system of betting will operate. The hurdles should be a good contest. Tudor had a race on the Hat at the Manawatu meeting, and should be nearly ready, while Pahu should, also run well. Harvest Moon, Beau Star and Gowaulea are lightweight possibilities. Favourites may be Tudor, Harvest Moon and Pahu. The topweights in the I’ukekura Hack have all failed at recent meetings, but they are liable to improve, and of the others Kurapae, Ingenuity and Ringside appear prospects. Most money may come for Ingenuity, Onewhetu and Tahurangi. The short distance in the Koru Juvenile is unlikely to suit Friesland, who requires to settle down, so he may be preferred in a later event. Fairfax, as a candidate for classic honours at Easter, should be prominent, and there is not a great deal of form among the, others, of whom Joy Box, Sporting Song and Windscreen appear the most likely. Probable favourites are Fairfax, Joy Box and Sporting Song. Aga Khan ran fair races at Manawatu, and has had an opportunity to freshen up. Chief Marionette, with a Ricearton trip iu view, will have to make a showing, while Ruri, on Manawatu form, will have a big following. Davistock and Cereal look the most likely of the lightweights. Most money may come for Ruri and Chief Marionette. The shorter distance in the Waireka Hack may be more suitable to Diagano, while Onewhetu also has to be considered The form of the whole field is nothing exceptional, and prospects appear in Earn, Gold Mission, Aussie Ra, Chikara, Ringside and Panloff. The best backed may be Diagano, Ringside and Panloff. There is a smart field of sprinters in the Okoari Handicap, headed by a classy pair in Diatomous and Golden Hair, both of whom are likely to run prominently. Rerepai is unlikely to race again before Easter, having had a good trial outing at Pahiatua, but Rereatu is a likely customer. Orapai and Lady Kyra appear Mie best prospects among the lightweights. Favourites may be Diatomous, Golden Hair and Lady Kyra. Friesland’s chance looks better over the extra .furlong in the concluding event, on which earlier running on the day may throw some light. The best backed may be Friesland. Kurapae and Gold Mission. The card is as follows: — 12.45— WAIKAWAU HURDLES HANDICAP, of £lOO. One mile and a half and 100 yards.

WESTPORT RACES Fields for To-day Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, April 12. The Westport Jockey Club will hold its meeting this week-end, .opening tomorrow and concluding on Monday. Good fields are engaged in nearly all events, but, as is usual on the Coast, several horses claim more than one engagement. Riccarton stables are well reprewepted, and a good share of the stakes should come their way. The following horses are likely to race prominently:— Trial Hack.—Quebec, Coalpit, Copenna. Morley Handicap.—Quietly, Montpere, Heather Glow. Electric Handicap.—Thcatin, Pawky. Scanlon Handicap.—Grecian Prince, Korero. Orowaiti Hack.—Monipere, Wino, Quebec.
