KING’S ACCESSION JUBILEE

Week of Celebrations WELLINGTON PLANS WELL IN HAND Arrangements are well in hand for tlie marking in Wellington of his Majesty the King’s silver jubilee, which will be celebrated during the week commencing on Monday, May 6. On that day it is proposed to hold a big demonstration of loyalty which will take the form of :j parade or assembly of all branches of the naval and military services which may be available. These will probably assemble in one of the back streets near Lambton Quay, and will proceed, via Molesworth Street, to the Parliamentary Grounds,, where the salute will be taken by his Excellency the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Galway. Suitable addresses reflecting the affection ami loyalty to the Crown of the people of this Jjpminion will be made from a dais on the main steps. In the evening a special entertainment of an appropriate character will be presented by the Broadcasting Board a’t the Town Hall. It is understood that some now overseas artists will appear on that occasion. A Garrison Ball On the evening of Thursday, May 9, a garrison jubilee ball will be held in the Town Halt which, it is understood, may be attended by their Excellencies Lord and Lady Galway. The Legion of Frontiersmen is co-operating with the officers of the New Zealand Defence Forces in connection with this function. There was some mention of a combined religious service in the Town Hall in honour of the jubilee, but on inquiry being made yesterday it was gathered that this idea had been abandoned. Each church will now hououi the occasion at its services on Sunday. May 12. City Illuminations. In honour of the occasion the Towe Hall will be flood-lighted on each night of jubilee week, Streamers of coloured lights will be suspended in Oriental Bay, and possibly across some of the main city thoroughfares. School Functions. Monday, May 6, is to be observed as a full holiday by the State schools, his Majesty the King having expressed the wisli that children be especially provided for in Jubilee Week. The Government desires that full effect be given to that wish. This has been conveyed to each education board, the secretaries of secondary school boards, technical school, boards, combined school boards, headmasters of Native schools and the controlling authorities of private schools. It is proposed that on the following day teachers should explain the significance of the jubilee. Toward some form of entertainment for the children, to mark the auspicious occasion, the Government is making a grant of sd. for each pupil. As Friday, May 10, is the breaking-up day for the first term holidays, it has been suggested by the Education* Department that this wduld be a suitable day for any entertainment which might be arranged. As far as Wellington is concerned, the Education Board is recommending that each school make it own arrangements to recognise the occasion, This means that there will be no mass gathering of school children, biit that each school will have its own function on the Friday morning.
