Burnside Sale

There was an improvement in the tone of the fat cattle market at the Burnside sale to-day, but fat sheep and lambs were sold at lower values. , Fat cattle: 280 head were offered, the quality generally showing an improvement on late yardings, some good pens of prime, heavy bullocks and cows being included. These met with keen competition and prices for both classes showed a rise of 10/- per head. Only a few pens of steers were forward in the store cattle section, and a slightly better sale resulted. Vealers were in short supply and met a keen market, w,hile boner and graziers’ cows sold at firm rates. A few good dairy cows were forward and a satisfactory sale resulted for young animals, but backward sorts and late culvers were not in demand, \ -
There was a large yarding of fat sheep, 2381 being penned. The yarding was in excess of butchers’ requirements and the sale opened with prices showing a drop of fully 3/- per head, and these values continued throughout except toward the close, when sales were difficult to effect even at the reduced rates. About 1090 lambs were forward, the quality being only. fair. Good butchers’ lambs met with a ready market, but as exporters operated on a reduced schedule the bulk of the entry was sold at lower prices. In the fat pig section 152 were penned. Good bac'oners sold well, up to £3/17/bcing obtained, while porkers sold at slightly reduced values. In the store pig section 116 were offered. Good stores sold to 21/-, but suckers were hard to quit even at reduced gates. Wanganui Sale Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, April 10. At the Wanganui sale to-day Freeman R. Jackson and Co. had a good entry of cattle slightly in excess of 500 head which met a dragging,sale, a fair proportion being passed at auction, but a good many lots were sold privately after the sale. The sheep yarding was not as heavy as in the past, and prices were firm at late rates. A good entry of pigs sold well. Sheep: Fat wethers, 22/-; prime ewes, 15/5 to 16/10 r light fat ewes, 13/5 to 14/-; prime lambs to 23/-; lighter, 16/2 to 18/-; small two-tooth ewes, 21/6; ditto, wethers, 17/-; four and five-year ewes to Down rams, 18/6; wether lambs to 13/10; b.f. lambs, 9/6 to 12/2. Pigs: Eight-month Tamworth boars. £4/4/-; baconers, £2/2/- to £2/10/-; choppers to £2; porkers, 30/- to 35/-; light ■ porkers, 24/- to 28/6; good stores, 18/- to 21/-; stores, 10/- to 15/-; slips, 7/- to 10/-; weaners, 6/- to 8/-; small, 5/- to 5/6. Cattle: Fat Jersey bullocks, £5/17/6 to £6; prime ex dairy cows, £3/10/- to £4; fat ditto, £1 to £3/5/-; fat heifers, £3/12/6 to £4/2/6; forward P.A. bullocks, £5/12/6 to £6/5/-; four-year bullocks, £4/12/6 to £4/19/-; 20-month P.A. steers, £3/10/- to £3/14/-; 24-year Hereford heifers, £3 to £3/12/6; P.A. weaner steers, £2/4/6; good works cows, 25/to 35/-; boner cows, 12/- to 17/6; heavy bulls, £2/15/- to £3; vealers: A heavy entry. Runners, 36/- to 42/-; good vealers, 30/- to 35/-; vealers, 20/- to 30/-; calves, 8/- to 17/6. Masterton Values Dominion Special Service. , Masterton, April 10. Lambs met a very good demand at the weekly Masterton sale to-day, particularly ewe lambs. Fat sheep sold well at rates on a par with last week’s prices. Young breeding ewes also sold at late rates, while older sorts were hard to quit. The market was keen for dairy cattle, but dry cattle remained at recent values. Pigs met a slow market, selling at low prices. The New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Company submitted a yarding of 2657 sheep, 46 head of cattle, and 50 pigs, making the following realisations:— Sheep: Wethers, 21/- to 22/-; good ewes, 13/7 to 14/10; fat ewes, 11/4 to 13/-; good fat lambs, 20/- to 22/-; fat lambs, 17/- to 18/-; 4,6, and 8-tooth ewes, r.w. Southdown rams, 23/6; 2-tooth ewes, 22/9; aged ewes, r.w. Southdown rams, 10/- to 12/-; empty ewes, 7/3 to 9/3; small 2-tooth wethers, 16/7 to 17/3; good b.f. lambs, 14/10 to 15/1; good ewe lambs, 15/6 to 17/2; small ewe lambs, 9/3 to 12/10; woolly wether lambs, 12/6 to 13/1; small lambs, 7/1 to 8/3. . Cattle: Good Jersey cow, on drop, £5; others, £3/5/- to £4; Jersey heifers, just calved, £3/5/- to £3/7/6; 14-year Jersey heifers, r.w.b., £2/5/- to £2/12/0 ; vealers, £l/10/- to £l/16/-; store cows, £1 to £1 7/-; Jersey bulls, £2/8/-. Pigs: Slips, 9/to 15/-; good weaners, 5/- to 7/-; weaners, 3/6 to 4/-. Dalgety and Co.. Ltd., offered a fair yarding of sheep, realising the following values:—Wethers, T7/2 to 19/-; 2-tooth ewes, 21/1; wether lambs, 11/6; ewe lambs, 12/1.
Stortford Lodge

, Values for quality entries generally were well maintained in the fat cattle section at to-day’s sale at. Stortford Lodge, when 340 head came forward. There was again a large number of lightly finished cows on offer which met only moderate inquiry, and in consequence there were numerous passings in this class of stock.
An entry of 1400 store cattle met a very depressing market, when with values well below vendors’ reserves, only 70 head were sold, the remainder being passed
in, .. A moderate entry of store sheep made late rates on forward wethers and good breeding ewes, but poorer sorts oj; sheep and store lambs were sticky at mier rates. Fat sheep were in over supply, and with export schedule rates still further reduced prices came back and passings were frequent Fat cattle: Bullocks, medium to prime, made £B/12/6, others from £6; cows, medium prime to prime, £4/12/6 to £5 10/-, others from £2/15/-; heifers, medium to prime, to £5/13/-, others from £2/10/-. Store cattle: Cows to £2/10/-. Fat sheep: Eaves, medium to prime, 13/6 to 16/9, others from 9/-; two-tooths, to 21/9; wethers, medium to prime, 19/to 22/6, others from 17/-; lambs, 15/to 22/7.
Store sheep: Wethers, to 20/6; ewes, two-tooths, to 22/-; five nud six-yen r, to 17/2; store, to 11/2; lambs, to 14/9.
