During the four weeks ended April 7, only SO unemployed relief workers were engaged by the Masterton County Council, all M these being in occupation of the council’s two single men’s camps at Blairlogie rnd Stronvar. It was resolved at a meeting oi the Eketahuna Borough Council that, as from April 1 last, the council will only pay accounts with regard to the Volunteer Fire Brigade’s expenses that have been passed by the council as a whole. It was held that the building and equipment ot the brigade are really the council s pro perty, the council being the responsible authority for the maintenance of a tirefighting force in the boroiigh

Football at Eketahuna It was reported at a committee meeting of the Eketahuna Old Boys’ lootball ’Club that there will be no shortage ot players this season, a-s both the senior and third-grade coaches are well pleased with the available players The ground will be re-marked with lime this, year, and a new set of properly padded goalposts are to be procured. A match is to be played at Eketahuna on Saturday with the Red Star club of Mnsterton.

Tar-sealing Operations , Reporting at the monthly meeting ot the Masterton County Council, the engineers, Messrs. Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt, stated that four miles 28 chains of tar-sealing had been completed on the Wellington to Napier Main Highway. the Mount Bruce Hall to Ruamahnnga Bridge section. The remaining 21 chains to the bridge had been realigned and regraded, while 21 chains of top course had been consolidated and 20 chains of base and top course were benisr eonstrnctoa

Not to Enteir Senior Team. Advice was received at a meeting ol the management committee of the Wairarapa Rugby Union last night from the Masterton Football Club, to the effect that it wished to withdraw its senior team from the championship competitom, providing certain players were reinstated into junior grade. After discussing the matter it was decided that the players in question should offer their services to some other club with senior teams, and should they fail to get a position, they might then apply personally to rhe union.

Lodge Temple Opened. . The jubilee installation and the ollicial opening of the new temple of the parterton Masonic Lodge was perfornied by the Provincial Grand Master, Brother Guinness, last night, when Brother C. A. Rodgers was installed by the Grand Lodge officers as Worshipful Master tor the ensuing year. A large number ot visitors was present, including members from Opunake, Levin, Masterton, Greytown, Featherston, Martinborough, Wellington, Eketahuna. Christchurch Hamilton, and Fiji.

Kopuaranga Railway Grossing. The district engineer, New Zealand Railways, advised at the montnly meeting of the Masterton County Council that representations had been made to him regarding the converting of a private level crossing south of the Kopuaranga railway station into a public crossing. He had no objection to the proposal and would recommend its approval, provided the department was not put to any expense. It was stated that the cost ot installing: cattle stops was estimated at £3O, while there would also be the expense of forming the. crossing, removing existing gates and shifting fences. The council decided to advise the settlers that it was their duty to find the cost of the i imposed work.

Meeting of Hockey Executive. The question of the Indian touring team was fully discussed at the first meeting bf the executive committee of the Bush Union Hockey Association recently It was considered that the New Zealand Hockey Association was placing too high a price on the game.. Country associations. on half-holidays, wore asked to find £75 plus the accommodation and expenses for the team while in the district. A detailed report of the visit of the Bush team to the New Zealand tournament at Christchurch was given by Milt. Burridgc; women’s handicap doubles, Misses P. Gee and N. Cohen; mixed handicap doubles. Miss R. Bradley and F. Phillips.

Rugby Football Management. It was resolved, at a meeting of the Wairarapa Rugby Union’s management committee last night to hold a seven-a-side tournament on a Saturday between the first and second rounds of the club championships. The following committees were appointed : —Finance Messrs. E. McKenzie. H. A McPhee. W G. Lamb; postponement. Messrs. E McKenzie, Q. Donald. W, G. Lamb: Referees' Appointment Board. Messrs. A. E. Freeman and K Fairbrother With regard to the Bush union’s proposal to extend its boundary so as to include Woodville. the Wairarapa delegates to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union were left free to vote on the matter ns they thought fit. A proposal from the Wairarapa High Schoo] that a lower grade competition should be played among the schools was held over for further consideration. It was suggested that the union provide referees and assist with the travelling expenses, as was the case with othe’r grades.
