PAHIATUA RESULTS

.Successful Meeting WALTON PARK WINS Totalisator Investments Show Increase (By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher.”) Palmerston North, April 10. The conclusion of the Pahiatua Racing Club’s annual meeting saw the club favoured with a slice of good luck, as fair weather early enticed a fair attendance, and the rain which set in for the concluding events had little effect on the financial' returns. The fixture was one of the most successful that has been held on the course for several seasons. Favourites had an in-and-out day, four scoring at short prices, and tile other four being beaten. Walton Park and Rerepai were hot orders to get home in the principal events, and the champion hack race was won by Big Dook, also at short odds. The attendance was smaller than on the first day. but the totalisator investments were £SSB9/10/-, as against £4502 10/- on the second day last year, an increase of £1387. The tptal for the two days was £12.058, as against £SB9G, an increase for the meeting of £3162. An inquiry -was held into interference met with, by Medway in the two-year-old race. W. Broughton, on the winner, Finnesko, was held responsible, but after evidence had been taken the stewards decided that the rider of Medway contributed to the trouble, and no action was taken. • W. Broughton rode three more winners to-day and iis> now seven ahead of L, J. Ellis for the jockeys’ premiership; P. Atkins also rode three winners. Comfortable Win. The maiden event was won very comfortably by Collision. He lay with Count Willonyx in behind the pacemaker. Snowball. to the straight and then ran home well clear of Count Willonyx. The favourite. Vinco, saddled with a 101 b. penalty for his first day’s win. came from the rear with a. good run. but he had no chance of doing better than a poor third. The winner is a five-year-old by Colossus from the family that produced Aberbrothock. Huntingdon and Hunting Star. His form was an improvement. Vinco was unlucky, losing a good deal of ground at the start. Favourite’s Failure. The shorter distance in the highweiglit I proved an upoetting factor, the favourite, Tanman. beginning slowly and being 1 kept back too long to have any charfee. In addition, he was checked on the turn I when Flamingo stumbled and threw his ] rider. .

Park Acre endeavoured to lead all the way. and was still in front until the final strides, when Royal Record just beaded him. Cheerful Bay was a good third, but there was a big gap to the rest. The form displayed was extremely moderate and.Taumau raced well below his

first day’s running. Swift and Sure got left and Cometa, for whom there was some money, was also poorly off. Favourite Wins Well. f Walton Park, a. hot favourite, duly scored in the Mangahao Handicap. La Poupee set a sound pace in an endeavour to win all the way. Eminent came at her first, but could not get up, but Walton Park wore her down and won well at the finish. Vertigern showed improvement to finish fourth. Had to Do His Best. The two-year-old rat’e on form looked a good thing for Finnesko, but he had a stiff task to head off his stable-mate, Rompalong. Rompalong got all the best of the start, but Finnesko gradually overhauled him, and, although he could not have done any better, he held the issue safe over the last furlong. Finnesko is the first winner credited to Defoe. Medway got put on the fence on the turn and the jockey Sheehan was thrown out of the saddle, making a miraculous recovery. A Handsome Win. Big Dook stripped an improved looking horse for the Champion Hack after his first day’s gallop and after being in a handy position throughout finished solidly for a handsome win. Royal Dash essayed to win from end to end and was still there entering the straight, where Big Dook, always going well in behind, pulled out and was followed by Darecourt. Big Dook finished resolutely, although he had to be hard ridden, and wore down Royal Dash, but Darecourt failed to get up, being a fair third, while Dorado headed the bunch at an interval of three or fo«r' lengths. The winner pulled hard early, but settled down to very resolute galloping over the concluding stages. Mild Surprise. A mild surprise eventuated in the hack scurry when Pegged Exchange got up in the last stride. The favourites Debut and Vonia Park cut each other’s throats in front, and when they weakened there was a rush to the post from behind, Pegged Exchange heading off Lady Ina, with Bonnie Song well up on the outer third, Debut fourth, and Vonia Park next. _ The judge .missed Bonnie Song, third going to Debut, and Vonia Park being placed fourth. This was Pegged Exchange’s first win since his. two-year-old days, since when he has been gelded and spelled. A Hot Favourite. The backers of Rerepai had to accept a very short price in the Newmarket Handicap, but it was “money from home.” He followed Hunting Day to the straight and then ran home an easy winner from West Tor. who was just as comfortably second. Hunting Day lost third money to Lady Ronald on the post. The winner put-up a good performance and added to his friends for the C.J.C. Great Easter Handicap, in which he will be ridden by G. Humphries. Double to Sweet Music. Sweet Music scored a double win by taking the last event in similar style to the first day’s success. She led to tlje straight and then drew away, Blygain issuing a good but fruitless challenge in the run home, though she was able to beat the rest decisively. Warvane was a

poor third and Royal Dash fourth. The winner was too good, for her opponents. Blygain is improving and running better over longer journeys. There was money for Tupuraiigi, but he faded out in the straight after having every chance. Detailed Results TRIAL PLATE, of £10; second £B, and third £4. Weight, 8.5. Six furlongs and 55 yards. 3 C.
