AN OFFICE DESK OF FIGURED BEECH

Presented to Mr. Bromley

An office desk was presented to Mr. W. Bromley (deputy-chairman of the Unemployment Board) yesterday morning by Mr. Arthur Seed (secretary of the Dominion Federated Sawmillers’ Association) on behalf of the members of the Co-operative Beech Company of Southland,, Ltd., whose headquarters are at Invercargill. The presentation was made to Mr. Bromley in recognition of the keen personal interest he has taken in securing recognition of the great merits of Southland beech timber and in the work of finding wider markets for it, particularly in England. The desk is a handsome piece of furniture, built entirely of figured silver beech, selected for its “flddle-back” or “waved” grain. It is a notable example of cabinetmakers’ craftsmanship, finished in a warm walnut brown stain, but not'sufileiently dark to obscure the rippled effect in the grain of the wood. Mr. Bromley expressed himself as delighted with the gift, and said he would treasure it all his life It was maintained that the returns of New Zealand silver beech in feet exported last year, compared with those for the previous two years, are as follow x 1932 1,474,986 1933 1,374,874 1934 2,410,228 The Increase in exports for 1934 is fairly substantial, and is considered to be the direct result of the efforts made to secure better recognition of . the special merits of the timber in England and Australia.
