POPULAR TEACHER

Presentation at Makara Air. A. E. Nod well, who has been teacher in charge of the Makara School for the past three years, was met on Saturday evening by residents of the Makara district on the occasion of his departure to take up a higher grade position at the Tokornaru School. On behalf of the residents, members of the tennis club and school committee, Mr. J. Purchase presented him with a silver tea set as the mark ’of appreciation of the work he had done in the district. In making the presentation .Mr. Purchase said that when be arrived at the school Air. Nodwell bail found the grounds to be nothing but a country paddock, while the children were somewhat backward in their work. Since his arrival a wonderful change had taken place. Gardens bad been laid out. a cricket pitch put down, and a number of other improvements had been made. Mr. Nodwell found that a pieee of ground that was being cultivated by a neighbouring farmer had actually belonged to the school, and as a result of his efforts two tennis courts had been laid out on it and a tennis club, which was opened on Saturday afternoon, had been formed. The Makara Hall was filled to overflowing for the presentation. Before taking tip his position at Alakara Air. Nod well was second in charge of the Thorndon Normal School.
