EGMONT MEETING

Cup Won By Hazoor CEREAL SURPRISES Totalisator Increase (By Telegraph—From “Poueke.”) Hawera, February 13. The Egmont autumn meeting, which opened in Hawera to-day, was well attended, and the totalisator returns, £ll,437, were £2528 in advance of last year’s figures. The day was fine, except that a little light ruin fell late in the afternoon. The course was fast. Hazoor won the Egmont Cup with a splendid late run from the back. The Nolan Cup was won by an outsider, Cereal, who paid the best dividend of the day. The trophy with this event was a canteen of cutlery which Mrs. S. C. Tonks, wife of the president, formally handed to Cereal’s owner, Mr. E. Knight, of Waitara. At the presentation ceremony Mr. Tonks congratulated Mr. Knight and reminded those present that the race perpetuated the name of Mr. It. H. Nolan, who had been a very prominent member of the Hawera Racing Club and a very good sportsman. : Hurdle Favourite Fails. March Alone was made a vary warm favourite for the Ohawe Hurdles, but Headland beat him easily. March Alone, a slow beginner, was ridden up to the rest of the field after going six furlongs, but as soon as he ranged alongside Headland, Headland accepted the challenge and, beating him for speed and in jumping, went On to a ten lengths’ win. Colossal i>'is eight lengths away third, and the only other runner was Beau Star. Navabo at Good Price. • ' The hack Full Throttle was balked to favouritism against the weak field which contested the Flying Handicap. Full Throttle, under a strong pull, made the early running from a bunched field, at the back 1 of which was Ruri. who had been caiight in the tapes of the starting machine. Crossing the top. Full Throttl? was just ahead of Navabo, who was next the rails, and Sanguine King, followed by Ruri, who had moveitup on the outer. Navaho came to the front soon after entering the straight and won nicely by half a length from Hunt the Slipper, who finished well half a length away. The third horse, Full Throttle, was a length and a half back. Sanguine-King, who was fourth, and Ruri were the only other starters. Navaho’s win was quite clear ,cut and her dividend was a good one. Sanguine King and Ruri should be improved by the race. Very Easy Win. Less than even money was taken about the chance of Pladie in the Tokaora Hack Handicap, which he won very easily. Harvest Moon got a little the best and Chikara the worst of a rather ragged start.- - Harvest - Moon was allowed to esttie down and then ran to the leaders and came round the home turn with Lady Eka and Harvest Moon. Lady Eka ran wide and Pladie came on for an easy two lengths win over Harvest Moon, who finished two lengths clear of Chikara. The only other competitors were Panloff and Lady Eka. Race for the Cup. The Egmont Cup drew a good field and was a good race. The.favourites were Fersen and Hazoor, who had run first and second in the Taranaki Cup. Monanui lost a little ground at the start, but the others went away in good line. Cherry King took up the running passing through the straight. Fersen ran round the field on the first bend and at the six furlongs joined Cherry King in the lead. Monanui made a fast move forward along the back stretch and ranged alongside the two leaders. Aga Khan and Hazoor were at the back of the field, but with five furlongs to go Aga Khan was being moved up on the outer. Reed, on Hazoor, elected to Keep to the rails at! long as advisable, realising, no doubt, that the pace was fast. Cherry King, Fersen, and Monanui came round the home turn in line, but Fersen was beaten at the distance. Cherry King ran on well, but Rust ranged up, and then Hazoor challenged with a fine late run which carried him to a neck victory over. Rust, who beat Cherry King by a head. Aga Khan finished well in fourth place; and was followed by Monanui. Fersen, and Tiger Gain. Hazoor was very patiently ridden, and rose to the occasion when his chance came. Fersen might have done better had his rider waited longer before seeking the lead, but there is no certainty he w.ould have won. He collapsed quickly. Cherry King ran better than he did at New Plymouth, and finished resolutely after setting a strong pace ali the way. The Juveniles. Fairfax, who gave a little trouble, at the barrier, but got away well, soon hit the front, and won the Juvenile Handicap easil yby three lengths from Kara and Matrimony, who were prominent all the way. Lifeguard. Silver Wings? Passing Fancy, and Trimden were next. Lifeguard should improve. Cereal’s Surprise. Cereal brought off a big surprise in the Nolan Cup, which was a good race, capped by an exciting finish. Bonnie Vale soon got to the front, and led along the back with Dombey and Lapel, and St. Clara following. Dombey did not last long, and the leaders to the straight were Bonnie Vale, Lapel, and Tahitrangi. Lapel, who was favourite, failed to wear down Bonnie Vale, who appeared to have the race in hand when Cereal dashed up on the outside and won by a head. Lapel was three-quarters of a length behind Bonnie Vale. Ingenuity was fourth nnd after her came Windscreen and Tahurangi. Cereal had run a fair race at New Plymouth, but his dividend ran into double figures. Lapel was squeezed back at the start and checked after going a furlong, but he made a fast run on the turn out of the straight and was in a good position all through the last six furlongs. With a smoother passage he might have just won. Bonnie Vale did well after making all the running, but St. Clara and Dombey ran badly. Tahurangi’s rider carried one of -the barrier tapes round his neck all the way. Ingenuity was unlucky' at the outset. Glenvane Just Wins. Pomp was a solid favourite for the Wbareroa Handicap. but, after being a leader most of the way. he finished last. Pomp was -accompanied in the run to the straight by Glenvane. behind whom

Chief Marionette and Midian were paired. Diagano brought up the rear. _ Glenvane was challenged by Midian soon after turning for home, but he hung on well enough to win by a- long head. Chief Marionette, who was third, was two lengths au;ay. Diagano was fourth and Pomp fifth" and last. A Poor Field. A. poor field contested the M aipapa Hack Handicap, which Onewhetu won. Onewhetu led Note Issue into the straight and went on to win by a length, .while Note Issue beat Flamingo by a similar distance. Inveresk, Dorado, Hard limes. Prince Reno, True Measure and Llouuy Bav followed. After going-,a furlong, Dorado struck trouble and was sent to the rear of the field.
