“MONTH’S MIND”

Late Archbishop Redwood Remembered BISHOP BRODIE’S EULOGY It is customary on the death of a priest of the Roman Catholic Church to honour his memory in what is known as the Month’s Mind, a solemn requiem Mass celebrated a month after the first funeral service. The Month's Mind for the death of the late Archbishop Francis Redwood took place pt St. Mary of the Angels Church, Boulcott Street, Wellington, yesterday, when there was a notable •gathering of the Hierarchy and clergy of New Zealand. His Grace Archbishop T. O'Shea, Metropolitan of New Zealand, presided in the sanctuary, and there were also present his Grace the Most Rev. Or. M Sheehan, Coadjutor Archbishop oi Sydney; the Rt. Rev. Dr. J. M. Liston, Bishop of Auckland; the Rt. Rev. Dr. M. J. Brodie, Bishop of Christchurch, The Rt. Rev. Dr. J. Whyte, Bishop of Dunedin, was celebrant. Others present were: Monsignori McManus (Palmerston North), Morkane (Dunedin), Connolly (Kilbirnie), Cullen (Hawera) and Delany. The first four, rows of the church were occupied by priests from all parts of the archdiocese, besides which there were representations of nuns from St. Mary’s Convent, Convent of the Sacred Heart and the Lewisham Hospital. Late Archbishop's Mitre. Dr. Whyte was aided by a choir of priests, under the direction of the Very Rev. Father W. Schaefer, who used the Gregorian chant, Fathers Milligan and Trehey were the cantors. The Very Rev. Father V. MeManug, C.SS.R., of St. Gerard’s, was deacon, and the Very‘Rev. Dr. Rossiter (of the Holy Cross College, Mosgiel) sub-deacon. The Very Rev. Father Hurley (Provincial of the Marist Order) was the assistant priest and the Very Rev. Fathers Reardon and Cullen (from St. Paul’s, Minnesota, U.S.A.), were the priests in attendance upon the presiding archbishop. The Masters of Ceremonies were the Rev. Father J. Dignan and V. McGlone. Hierarchy and clergy robed in the presbytery and proceeded in procession via Boulcott Street and through the church, tiling to their places past the representation of the catafalque and casket, which bore the late archbishop’s coat-of-arms and his mitre. At the conclusion of the service, the Dead March in “Saul” was played on the organ by Mrs. G. B. Aldridge. Bishop Brodie as Eulogist. The “occasional address” was delivered by his Lordship Bishop Brodie, ■who said that at the “Month’s Mind” it was usual to review the life of the priest concerned, but in the case of the revered Archbishop Francis Redwood, his life was so long and his achievements so great and varied that such a review would have to be left to the historian. His Lordship referred to the birth of the archbishop, his coming to New Zealand with his parents in 1842, his early education and call to the priestly vocation when only 15 years of age. He then dwelt on the archbishop’s success as a student, his ordination, and his consecration as Bishop in London by Archbishop (afterward Cardinal) Manning. It was on that occasion that the late Archbishop Redwood delivered an address, one of such rhetorical brilliance and maturity of thought that those privileged to be present, considered Wellington fortunate in having so able a man as bishop. His Lordship dwelt particularly on the Archbishop’s pastoral work in his early days, recalling that the diocese of Wellington then included the whole of New Zealand with the exception of Auckland and Otago, and yet he was known to have assiduously covered the ground. But perhaps his particular crown of glory was what he had achieved for Catholic education in this country. St. Patrick’s College had in the 50 years of its existence produced a hundred priests, an. achievement probably not equalled by any other kindred institution in the world. Faithful Coadjutorshii). From its first group of students came his Grace Archbishop O'Shea, who had served 22 years of faithful coadjutorship before succeeding Archbishop Redwood as Archbishop of Wellington and Metropolitan. Finally the eulogist told of his final interview with the late Archbishop, who had lamented that he was no longer able to perform the adorable sacrifice of the Mass, and he believed that his Grace’s ready consent to the serious operation was with the hope that It might—even at 95 years of age—restore him sufficiently to enable him to celebrate Mass.
