HOUSE ON FIRE
Incendiarism Charge as Sequel .By Telegraph—Press Association Blenheim, February 12. While lying in his bed in Havelock, Constable Hardy heard noises in a shop connected with a house on the opposite side of the street, and knowing that the householder, Miss S. L. Elliott, was away, he investigated. On peering through’ a glass panel in a door, the constable saw a man with heaps of straw busily engaged in setting the place on fire. Slipping round to the rear of the premises, he collared the man as he ran from the building, and after securing him doused the fire with buckets of water and summoned the brigade, which saved the building, though considerable damage was done. It is stated that fires had been started in several rooms. As a sequel, 'William Edward Slattery Corliss appeared in the Blenheim Magistrate’s Court this morning, and was charged with wilfully setting the premises on fire. He was remanded until February 20. Corliss, who is an Australian, rented a detached room at the rear of Miss Elliott’s premises.
