MORTGAGE FINANCE
In view of/he importance and far-reaching nature'of the proposals the Minister of Finance might well have acceded, without loss of dignity or seriously delaying his legislation, to the request of the Associated Chambers of Commerce Committee for a further conference on the National Mortgage Finance Corporation plan. It would appear, however, from a forecast by our lobby correspondent, that the only opportunity left for representations to be made will be when the Bills dealing with the question are referred/to a Parliamentary Committee. The House, it is stated, will adjourn immediately after the legislative proposals have been introduced to allow members an opportunity of digesting them. It is stated that . the Bills will furnish a complete answer to the criticisms that have been made. From the points mentioned by our lobby correspondent in that connection we are not so sure that they will satisfy the Associated Chambers of Commerce Committee and other critics. Parliament therefore should see to it that reasonable opportunity is provided for criticisms and suggestions to be submitted to its own Committee. It is of the utmost importance, in view of the possible reactions of these proposals upon the business economy of the country, that there should be no ground for any suggestion after the legislation has been enacted that those competent to criticise—and advise—Parliament and the Government had been ’denied the fullest opportunity of expressing their views.
