AMBULANCE TRIP
200 Miles to Hospital By Telegraph.— Press Association Auckland, February 11. One of the longest journeys ever undertaken by an ambulance in New Zealand was completed at 3 o'clock this morning, when a woman who had been injured on a beach near Whakatane reached the Auckland Hospital and was given a blood transfusion which saved her life. The woman, who is a resident of Devonport and was convalescing after a serious illness, slipped and injured herself. Her Immediate removal to Auckland for a blood transfusion was ordered. The journey was commenced by private car. the car being met on the road and the patient transferred to the ambulance. She was very weak, and stimulants had to be administered frequently. Only a low speed could be maintained, and eleven hours after leaving Tauranga the ambulance reached the hospital. A blood donor was waiting, and the patient, who was extremely exhausted, soon rallied. To-day her condition is reported as satisfactory 1 . The total journey was almost 400 miles.
