BATHING SUITS IN CITY

Two Men in Streets It is. the privilege, of the business man to work in his shirt sleeves and to unbutton his waistcoat on the side streets on liis way. home to lunch: no one looks askance at the road-mender in his singlet, and, on hot days, when he is without it. But only at the seaside is it the custonrfor the young man to appear in bathing costume. Memories of* a Wellington cause were recalled yesterday when two young men, bravely clothed in large smiles and rolled-down bathing costumes, stepped forth into Featherston Street. This sort of thing might be done with Impunity at any seaside resort, but in Featherston Street a.t two in the afternoon—people gazed. This was to be no Gandhi emulation act, however, nor even a plea for dress reform: it seepied to be done for the sake of amusement, lin'd appeared to have u. swim in prospect at the end of it. The young men, witli pleased looks, changed their direction toward the waterfront, and passed out of public view. ‘

Just what happened to them is still a matter of conjecture. They may have had their swim on the waterfront and returned home without having Ijeen inconvenienced by looking for dressing sheds, but when asked about it people on the waterfront seemed to be rather at sea. The police, probably having decided that in view of yesterday’s weather conditions it would have been unwise to place them in a cooler, also knew nothing about it. Apparently people sometimes do swim on the waterfront, but they usually undress in tlie shed there. At any rate tlie two young men have set a singular precedent, and their reappearance will be watched for with interest.
