TARANAKI CUP TO FERSEN

Won in Decisive Style BURNISH IN FLYING HANDICAP Mishap in Hurdle Race (By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher.”) New Plymouth, February 7. The autumn, meeting of the Taranaki Jdckey Club opened to-day. in fine, warm weather, but a strong southerly breeze prevailed which raised: unpleasant dust clouds fr6m the plough training track. Conditions, however, were favourable for racing, and the club had a good day. The Taranaki Cup wah won -by the local horse, Fersen, owned by Mrs. w. D. Graham and trained at Hawera by 0. Cox. The Flying Handicap saw Burnish return to form with a brilliant win. Mr. G. M. Currie's stable also scored later in the day with Rust. Sir Charles Clifford’s colours were unfurled on the course for the first time, and he had the satisfaction of seeing one of his two representatives in Hororata win the Juvenile Handicap. The late Sir George Clifford used to patronise Taranaki meetings, but it is several years since the stable was represented. The totalisator handled £0834, compared with £7359/10/- on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £2472 10/-. There was, however, one race less in X 034. Mishap in Hurdle Race. There was a mishap in the hurdle race, Gowanlea falling and bringing down Ythan. T. Williams, the rider of Gowanlea, was taken to hospital. An inquiry whs opened and adjourned after evidence showed that the fall was due to Gowanlea getting on to the heels of Blacksmith. Illuminate found 11.9 a heavy burden at the end of the hurde race after March Alone had taken him on over the last mile, and he weakened to allow the lightweight a ■ comfortable win. Both horses jumped well, especially Illuminate. Blacksmith was a very poor third. Gowanlea fell’ entering the straight the first time and Ythan, coming from the rear, fell over him. Gowanlea’s eaddle came right off. Ythan came in very lame. An extraordinary feature of the race was the betting. Illuminate, at prohibitive odds for a win, was the actual outsider for a place and paid an astounding price. The winner' was at double figures straight, out. Hororata Away Well. The Riccirton filly Hororata jumped away well in the Ngnmotu Juvenile and this greatly assisted her to. beat-Note Issue, as the latter fulled .to move off on ven terms, and then went over extra ground. Link Divine went out with Hororata early, but Matrimony ran up quickly and Link Divine dropped back. Note Issue put in a fine run on the turn, but she was unable to reach Hororata. Link Divine was a good third, with a gap to the bunch headed by. Windscreen, Grateful, Daivet and Matrimony. The winner, while fortunate that Note Issue got poorly off. showed a good turn Of speeds Link'Divine" ran well aiid showed improvement. Chief Lady refused to face the' start and was left, being a hundred yards behind , when they were let go, and she returned to the enclosure the reverse why. Burnish Brilliant.

Burnish returned to her best form to will the Flying Handicap, and her performance was full of merit, as she was poorly off. while Copyist also lost ground.' The worst sufferer, howeve), was Limulus, whose chance went prac-

tlcally at once. Diatomous cut out the pado from Lady Kyra, Bodyline and Moatoa, but by the time the turn was reached Burnish had run through on the rails into second place. .She went on entering the' straight . and challenged Diatomous, with Bodyline also threatening in a close finish. Burnish held on best, while Bodyline just failed to reach Diatomous. Lady Kyra was fourth and then a gap to Limulus, Moatoa and Copy, ist Burnish had to be freely used after losing ground, and while she afterward got a good run it was a brilliant effort, while she also hung on very well. Diatomous had every chance, but he showed better form than at Trentham. Bodyline ran well and was always dangerous. Decisive Win In Maiden.

panloff won the maiden event decisively after having none the best of the running. Inveresk,- Lady .Eka and Joy Box led to the turn from Panloff, the rest so far back as to have no chance. Panloff went up coming into the straight and was the fourth horse out, but he had too much in reserve for Inveresk, who beat Lady Eka and Joy Box Just as comfortably. Ringside, and Vinco were next. Nothing outside the first four ever had a cliatice, most of them failing to go off smartlv. On the other hand, Inveresk jumped away two lengths clear, and even then could not win. The winner is a qualified hunter. Red Sand got left. 1 Hazoor a Bit Unlucky. Fersen won the Taranaki Cup in decisive style. Ho was last early, but running round his field on the home turn he ran on to score handsomely. Red Manfred, made the pace, from Hazoor. with Cherry King handy on the rails, practically alongside Hazoor. and then there was a gap to the others, headed by Aga Khan. Fersen went Up to Red Manfred on the turn, and Hazoor appeared to lose a little ground. Fersen had Rod Manfred settled almost as soon as caught, but both Hazoor and Cherry King finished and had the winner doing his best. Red Manfred was h fast fourth, and Aga Khan next. , ' Fersen's win was clear cut, but Harbor looked a bit unlucky, while Cherry Klug was going well again at the finish. Ingenuity's Surprise. After appearing beaten on the turn, Ingenuity fought off a surprise in the hack distance' event, in which Red Rufus, solidly backed, never looked dangerous. Ingenuity led all the way, and after having beaten off St. Clara she was challenged and headed by Dorado. Dorado, however, weakened in the last few strides, and Ingenuity got her head in front again at the post. St. Clara was a moderate third, and Red Rufus fourth. The winner’s turn was long overdue. Red Rufus ran a poor race,, ; A Close Finish. Rust won the Mimi Highweight in the last strides. Full Throttle and Merry Way made the running, and just as Full Throttle hud settled Merry Way, Rust challenged and just got up. The winner had not raced for several weeks,'but this was the best form. Chief Marionette was not bitting out freely . on the going. Rust only just-won, but she would .have, been unlucky to lose. , Drown Betty Nicely. Betty, always well placed and going Well, won the concluding event nicely. Gold Gleam and Debut ran with.-hSr -to the straight, with Pladie and AusSie Ra in behind. Brown Betty took chargo in' the straight, and had the race won by the time Pladie could get through. Pladie finished well, but the straight was too short for him. Aussie Ra and Onewhetu. were right up, and then came Cereal, Who got very badly off, Gold Gleam and Glenvane. The winner showed good form at eilingt'iu, and is improving.- Pladie, Aussie Ra and Onewhetu all ran good races, and Pladie was a bit unlucky, Debut dropping back on him on the turn. ; Details of the Racing
