Association Ferns. The Association Ferns have again changed hands, being won from the Wellington club by Ngaroma, Mesdames Edney and Galvin representing the latter club, and Mesdames Ramsay and Billing the former. The suburban club proved too strong for the holders. Mrs. Edney is a very strong player, and very early in the game had her clip on 4 back. Her long shooting was excellent, which gave her side control of the game. The final score was 26-15. The Ngaroma club is very strong, as at present it holds both the Association Ferns and the McKenzie Cues.

The McVilly Cup. The Kelljjirn club has recently been presented with a very handsome solid silver cup and miniature by , Mrs. McVilly, president of the club. The large cup is for a perpetual challenge, the small one to become the property of the winner? The competition is open to all members of the club, .and to be run on a two-life system, and to be competed for annually. Jlrs. McVilly is a very generous member of the club, and worked very hard at its formation. She was the first president, and was re-elected . president last year for the club’s twenty-first birthday. She still retains that position, and has been made a life patroness of the club.

Answer to Correspondent. Rule 33b appears to be giving trouble again, owing no doubt to the fact that the wording has been altered. This law applies only to the occasion upon which the hoop is run in the croquet stroke, not the roquet stroke. Law 33b reads : “If his ball runs a hoop in order and before the stroke is concluded again hits the croquet ball, a roquet is not deemed to have been made, except when the ball remains in contact after coming to rest.” In other words this rule applies to an Irish peel (that is, peeling both balls through the hoop on the croquet stroke), and if the ball in play hits the preceding ball before it comes to rest, a roquet is not deemed to have been made, unless the balls remain in contact. International Croquet at Melbourne. In the international contest in Melbourne some excellent croquet has been played. An extract from a Melbourne paper states that one of the best contests was that between Mr. E. L. Ward Petlev, of England, and Mrs. W. N. Corbet, of New Zealand. Both players got the lawn very quickly, and after Mrs. Corbet had played a good break to four back Petley got in and followed up with a break, also ’to four back. For a while both players became very cautious, until Mrs. Corbet got her other ball to the peg and Petley liis other ball to the sixth. Mrs. Corbet then played her other ball to the peg and pegged one out, leaving Petley with one ball on four back and the other on the sixth. He shot and hit but failed to score, but laid a trap for his opponent, who played into it. Petley, taking command, played a magnificent stop shot which gave him a three-ball break, which he played from the sixth to three back. Mrs. Corbet again shot into his game, and Petley then played to the peg, winning by one point. Mr. C. J. Miller, captain of the Australian team, is also playing up to his best form. In .his game against Mrs. C. Purdie he played two perfect breaks, finishing the. game in 25 minutes, surely a record for a croquet match. The game between Mrs. W. E. Caldow and Captain Hartnell. New Zealand, and Mrs. E. Terry and Mr. J. C. Windson was another excellent exhibition of croquet. Mrs. Terry was the first to get going and played a well-managed break to the rover hoop. Captain Hartnell shot and hit, and prepared a break, but failed at the second hoop. Windson. who was off his shot, failed to hit, and. Hartnell continued to one back. Windson again missing the long shot, Mrs. Cnldow got going for the first time and played a break beautifully, peeling Mrs. Terry through rover in preparation for the peg out, but failed at three back, letting Windson in. From then on New Zealand had no chance, as this left Windson

the balls set for a break, which he played right through, to finish the game 26Personals. Mrs. Lowery and Mrs. D. C. Henderson (Wellington) are competing in the Taranaki tournament, and will be the guests of Mrs. Hartnell. Mrs. Anstis (Palmerston North) is the guest of Mrs. Bock, Lower Hutt, and is taking part in the tournament.
