Jouth Drowned in Waikato at Hamilton RESCUE ATTEMPT FAILS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, February C. While swimming in the Waikato River, near the traffic bridge at Hamilton, late this afternoon, a youth about 20 years of age, Leslie John Lovegrove, of Grey Street, Hamilton East, got into difficulties and was drowned. A young man, Francis Cassidy, who noticed deceased’s plight, swam out to him, holding him up, but he subsequently lost his hold., deceased disappearing. The body was recovered an hour later by the police. BRAVERY OF GIRL Rescue at Tangimoana Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, February 6. A heroic rescue of a drowning girl at Tangimoana beach was made by a pupil of the Palmerston North Girls’ High School, Dorothy Gibbs, recently. A letter of commendation is to be sent to her by the Manawatu Head Centre of the Royal Life Saving. Society. The society is also sending a similar letter to Miss Nola Percy, of Feilding, who recently rescued a boy-from drowning at Waitarere beach. Miss Gibbs had to go well beyond the line of breakers to rescue the drowning girl The two girls were carried well down the beach before they were assisted ashore by onlookers who waded out into the sea as far as possible.
