RECORD LOWERED

Blakeley’s Fine Swim WELLINGTON CARNIVAL ’ Brilliant sunshine, with a refreshing ■ light breeze from the north, favoured the ■ Wellington. Centre’s swimming carnival / at Te Aro baths on Saturday afternoon, ’ which, although many more spectators i could have been accommodated, proved a , financial success. One of the highlights ’ of the carnival was the magnificent effort ; of J. C. Blakeley in lowering the centre’s i record for the 440yds. championship by . 2J seconds, covering the distance in 5.42 i 1-5. J. Williams, who swam second, = equalled the previous record. There was [ a slight improvement over previous ext hibitions in the diving display, but never--1 theless the standard could have been 1 much better. The 100yds. women’s ’ championship went to Miss S. Campbell (Hutt), the previous holder, Miss J. / Wright, not defending the honour. The ” race itself fell short of what. had been i anticipated. D. Plank (Maranui) sur--3 prised by winning the 50yds. centre cham* 3 pionship. He wjis fortunate in. that he - avoided the crowding which hampered - the minor place-fillers. The breaststroke t relay for the Worser Bay banner was an • easy race for the Wellington club team, who won by 20 yards from Lyall Bay. 1 The last-named team was disqualified i afid Hutt placed second. In the relay ’ handicap, Worser Bay A won comfortably •, from Island Bay. ‘ The officials were the following:— ‘ Starter of handicap events, _ Mr. O. Hughes; starter of championship events, Mr. W. H. Gerrie; starters’ steward, Mr. A. Somerville; check starter, Mr. H. Dickson; timekeepers, Messrs. Clark, : Morris, V. Allan; referee, Mr. N. Mo ■ Cartney ;■ judges, Messrs. A. Kelly, A. L A. "Waller (Varsity), 3. i Time 73. Tills event- did not come up to the anticipated standard, and although I Miss Wright did not defend her title, the new holder is capable of much better time. I The first 25yds. was swum evenly, Miss Campbell holding a slight lead. At the , turning board Miss Campbell slightly improved her position, Miss C. Gotlieb, who . had swum up fast, taking second position from Miss Waller. At the 75yds. mark ' Miss Campbell further improved her advantage, holding approximately a yard lead. There were no changes in the minor positions Over the final 25yds. Miss Camp- ; lieu held an unassailable position, winning by about 4yds. from Miss Pritchard, who. In a thrilling finish, beat Miss Waller by a touch for second. Miss Gotlieb was a close fourth. . 50yds Wellington Centre Championship (present holder, J. C. Blakeley, Lyall Bay Club).—D. Plank (Maranui), 1: A, Somervell (Hutt), 2; J. C. Blakeley (Lyall Bay), 3. Time, 25 4-5. From the starting board to the other end there was a certain amount of loafing. Plank, who drew the inside lane, maintained an even pace throughout, while Blakeley seemed content to wait in slightly behind. The five competitors appeared to close in over the final 25, and in the dash for the finishing board Claridge, Somervell and, to a lesesr extent, Blakeley crowded, all swimmers going off their pace. Somervell hung on long enough to beat the fast-finishing Blakeley by a little over a foot. Plank’s success, although well earned, might not have been crowned had the crowding not taken place. 50yds. Inter-club Handicap.—First semifinal : G. Lloyd, 1; H. Tonks, 2. Time, 31. Won by a touch. Second semi-final: A. Curginven. 1; C. Gotlieb, 2. Time, 28. Won by half a yard. Final: G. Lloyd, 1; C. Robertson (21sec.), 1; S. Wood (16sec.), 2. Final: J. Robertson. 1; R. Meek, 2; G. McKnight, 3. Time, 88 2-5. Men’s' Centre Diving Championship (present holder, R. Tuppen, Hutt club).—R. Tuppen (Hutt), 1; H. Tremewan (Hutt), 2. On the whole the standard of diving was much superior to that of last season, but nevertheless, from the display given, there appeared no potential aspirant for Dominion honours. 440yds. Wellington Centre Championship (present holder, J. C. Blakeley, Lyall Bay club). —J. C. Blakeley (Lyall Bay), 1; J. Williams (Lyall Bay), 2; R. Pelham (Lyall Bay), 3. Also competed: D. Plank (Maranui). K. Thwaites (Lyall Bay). Pelham set tl'ie pace over the first 50yds. with Thwaites close behind, and the rest strung out. Tile second length saw Williams take the lead with Pelham second and Thwaites third. In the third lap Williams still lead with Blakeley, who. was swimming confidently second, and Pelham third. There was no change of positions over the fourth and fifth laps, with the exception that Blakeley and Pelham had improved their positions. Blakeley and Pelham, swimming strongly, were within two feet of Williams at the turn over the sixth lap. Plank, who withdrew at this stage, never looked likely to be in the finish. The seventh turn saw Williams, Blakeley and Pelham practically on terms with Thwaites about five yards behind in fourth place. Williams drew away in the eighth lap and turned with shout a foot to the' advantage . of Blakeley. Pelham being approximately two vards behind, third, and two lengths in front of Thwaites. In the swim to the rope williams and Blakeley had it to themselves, and It was not until over the final 15yds. that Blakeley asserted himself and shot ahead to win by four feet from Williams, with Pelham three yards behind third. Blakeley’s time of 5.42 1-5 lowers the Wellington centre record by 2 1-5. Williams's time equalled the centre record. Blakeley was accorded a great reception from the crowd when his record-breaking time was announced. lOOvds. Inter-club Handicap.—First heat: II Tonks (25sec.), 1; H. Wright (12aec.). 2 Time, 80. Second heat: O. Oliver (llsec.), 1; G. Williams, 2. Time, 67 1-5. Final: H. Wright. 1; H. Tonks, 2. Time, 67 4-5. 200yds. Relay Handicap (four swimmers per team). —Worser Bay A (A, Wilton, W. Hepburn, N. and C. Jones). Bsec., 1; Island Bay (Neal. H. Tonks. Burton, Clark), 20sec., 2. Time, 2.11. Worser Bay Banner Breaststroke Relay (four men. 50yds. each swimmer). —Wellington (W. Pope, D. Page. W. Bell, K. Sprv), 1; Hutt (L." Deans. H. Tremewan. K. Sleek. G. Hay), 2. Time, 2.31 3-3. Lyall Bay finished second, but was disqualified for not swimming the correct stroke. Wellington won by about 20 yards, with a touch between second and third. Water Polo Championship (A Grade). — Maranati! 1, Lyall Bay 1. The match was much below the standard that had been expected, and at times developed into a farce. Too much latitude was allowed on both sides, with the result that unfair tactics were frequently indulged in. Two players, a Lyall Bay back and a Maranui forward should have been ordered from the water for breaches of the rules. It was the poorest display seen at Te Aro baths this season. D. Plank scored for Maranui with a fine throw from right on the left, while Jim Meikle. Lyall Bay centre half, equalised shortly after with a straight throw, the ball hitting the crossbar and rebounding into the net. Both goalkeepers had some narrow escapes. As the game progressed it gradually deteriorated into a scramble, and it was a relief to the spectators when the final whistle sounded.
