Accountancy Examinations

Sir. —I note from the letter of “Sympathetic But Firm” my suggestion that the New Zealand Accountants’ examinations be held in the evening is absurd. This remark is rather inclined to be arrogant, and seems quite uncalled for. If your correspondent meant he thought the suggestion absurd that is quite a different matter. On second thoughts his better judgment may prevail. Why are the examinations of the Australian Association of Accountants held in the evenings? At what hour of the twenty-four are the accountancy examinations of the Royal Society of Arts and the London Chamber of Commerce held? Is this another case where only the minority opinion of New Zealand is right, and the majority opinion of larger countries is wrong? If the average young man in New Zealand can —and will-—expend a lot of his energy on the tennis court in the summer, and on the dance floor in the winter, after office hours (not that I grudge him bis sport and his pleasure—far from it), what is to prevent him expending the same energy when the time comes iji the examination room in the eveniugs? In any case, the average student does his study at night time without in any way appearing to impair his physical fitness. The daytime examinations may be all very well for such as men in business on their own account, but it is very often most inconvenient for paid servants to neglect their work for such examinations'. —I am, etc., “COMMON SENSE.”
