TEN NEW CARDINALS
Vatican Anticipation According to a message from Rome in a recent London newspaper, it was expected in Vatican circles that ten new cardinals would shortly be appointed by his Holiness the Pope. One of the new Cardinals, it is suggested, will be Mgr. James Louis Copello, Archbishop of Buenos Aires. He organised the World Eucharistic Congress recently held there. Another matter of considerable importance that will be discussed is whether the proportion of Italian Cardinals can be reduced and the honour spread to other countries. . .For a long time Italian Cardinals have formed at least 50 per cent, of the College of Cardinals —at present there are 27 Italian and 27 non-Italian Cardinals. The argument in the past has bebn that a strong proportion of Cardinals should be Italian because they could best deal with the difficult relations 'that previously existed between the Vatican, and the Government of Italy. This difficulty no longer exists and it is considered probable that the ten Cardinals—should the Pope decide to maie the appointments next month — will be chosen from outside Italy.
