SENTENCED TO PRISON
Zinoviev and Kamenev Moscow, January 17. Zinoviev. Kamenev, and 17 others were convicted, but escaped the death sentence despite the workers’ demands that they should be shot. Zinoviev was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment, Kamenev to five, and the others to from 10 to 5 years. The property of the accused will be confiscated. The tribunal in its judgment stated that the existence was proved of a counter-revolutionary group, the chief members of which had already been sentenced for the Kirov murder. Other accused, whose cases were postponed, gave evidence that the “Moscow Centre,” of which Zinoviev was the chief organiser, frequently attempted to organise a counter-revolutionary bloc, aiming at a widespread struggle against the Soviet. It was also announced that 49 others of the Zinoviev group would be sentenced (o concentration camps for periods of four to five years, while 29 were exiled for periods of two to five years. The "L’ravda,” in a leader before the sentence, said that the curse of millions had fallen on their criminal heads, and the enraged voice of the whole country demanded punishment. NEW HERESY HUNT Many Dismissals Result (Received January 18, 7.15 p.m.) Riga, January 17. A new hei'esy hunt is being carried out. Many Communists, officials, professors and teachers throughout the country have been dismissed, expelled from the party on a charge of “Zinovievisiu.” TESTING OCEAN BED £ Work on Bear of Oakland Montreal, January 17. A message from the Bear of Oakland slates that through manual soundings, started while the Bear was near Coalman Island on Monday, considerable knowledge regarding tho continental shelf has been determined. Close to Franklin Island pebbles and also a microscopic mollusc were brought to the surface. These will be turned over to the scientists in Little America for examination. The entire western side of Ross Sea is filled with an unbroken field of pack ice. After a visit to the station at Cape Crozier the vessel will proceed to Little America.
