Subsidised Schools
Sir, —Archbishop O'Shea, as reported in your paper, is none the less determined to demand the Government of this country as well as the Governments of other countries to subsidise Roman Catholic schools. Also previously you reported Cardinal Macßory as condemning the Government of Australia for not maintaining Roman Catholic schools. I write as one of the countless thousands of people in this Dominion who resent. these utterances and demands of one particular sect, and to record my protest against the undue prominence given same in the columns of the public Press of late. It may seem all very well for members of the Roman Hierarchy to indulge . in this class of propaganda without ceasing, but it must be understood that the Govment of this land as well as. the Government of any other country is voted into office by the people to govern the people as a whole, and not just to attend to the grievances and demands of one particular section. The great majority of the people, as represented by the. Government, strongly disapprove of maintaining these schools when the public schools of the land supply more than an adequate education to any normal child at no cost whatsoever.—l am. etc., T ALEX. RIDDELL. Wellington, January 16. [This letter has been abridged.]
