After the counting of votes in the Saar jUebiscite had disclosed an overwhelming majority in favour of the territory returning to Germany the League Council decided at Geneva to transfer the Saar to .Germany at the soonest possible moment. Although it was expecting a big German victory, its extent surprised and also revlicved League circles, as the small, ness of the minority removes the last check on the return of the Saar to Germany. The final official figures were: — ; For return to Germany 109 For the status quon 46,513 For inclusion in France 2,1'34 Total votes cast •• • 5.08,704 Spoiled papers 90J Blank papers 1,257 [The total number eligible to vote was 5^9, 54211 The voting figures are now being announced district by district in each of the 83 sections into which the Saar was divided for. voting purposes. No commune* voted against a return to Germany. Details of the voting in Saarbrucken were: For 76,761; for the status quo, 10,413; for France, 286.
