SURE TO START

Vintage jn Cup NOTES AND COMMENTS Morris on Autopay (By “The Watcher.”) Unless there is a radical alteration in plans, Vintage will be a definite starter in the Wellington Cup and will be ridden by A. E. Ellis. Only Penalty. Galilee is the only runner in the Wellington Stakes to earn a penalty. Sue will carry an extra Tib. Stiff Affected. When Te Ua crashed through the rails while competing in the bunlie race on the first day at Woodville, last month, it left him very sore, and ou the way he is working at Trentham he has not yet fully recovered from that mishap. Southern Halid. No fewer than seven of the 15 acceptors in the Trentham Higbweight are owned in the South Island. Winning Combination. L. G. Morris has been definitely engaged to ride Autopay in the Telegraph Handicap on the opening day of the Wellington meeting. Autopay is in good order after his holiday racing, and provided he does not lose ground at the start, he will run prominently next week. Horses for Melbourne. G. Jones, private trainer at Caulfield to Mr. IV. R. Kemball, who arrived by the Wangaiiella last night, will take back six young horses for his patron. They are five two-year-olds and a yearling. The two-year-olds are three colts and a filly by Cape Horn and a filly by Gainseourt. The yearling is a colt ay Lord Qucx from Princess Pat, the dam of Lady Pam. He is the likeliest of the lot. Tracks in Great Order. The continued watering of the tracks at Trentham has kept then! in Splendid order during the dry spell, and their vivid greenness contrasts very favourably with the surroundings, the grass elsewhere bearing a parched appearance. Sprint Candidate. Princess Doreen is one of the fancied candidates for sprint honours .at the Wellington meeting. She has had a quiet time since returning from Ellerslie, but she is very well and sprinted six furlongs yesterday morning vdry smartly. coming home over the last half in 49}. Trentham tracks are fast, but she did her work well.

Sunee’s Rider. The Auckland lightweight A. G. Parsons has been engaged to ride Sunoe at the Wellington meeting. Sunee as usual is working well on the tracks, but lie has been disappointing in public since his November win at Carterton,

Takes a Good One. Prior to last year, when Diatomous stopped the run of success of two-year-olds in the Wellington Stakes, the youngsters had won the race five years in succession. It takes a very smart youngster to win this race, especially with a penalty. and there are seven three-year-olds in this year’s event.

No Dual Engagements. No horse claims two engagements on the opening day of the Wellington meeting.

Holiday Winner. Lueidus Is to make the trip to Trentham. This Te Awamutu-trained gelding won all his three races on the Taranaki circuit, and is greatly improved, but something less ambitious on the second and third days may be more in his line than the Telegraph Handicap. .

Showed Promise Earlier. There is some promising material in the Apprentices’ Plate on the opening day at Trentham, and among them is the three-year-old Hostis. Hostis showed promise at Riccarton in November, and should be a better horse now. He is by Honour from Goldspear, by Greyspear from Boniform’s sister, Sunglow, so he has the breeding credentials for anything. Handicap Two-Year-Olds.

Four of the eight acceptors in the two-year-old handicap on Anniversary Day are trained at Trentham, while of the other four two come from Woodville stables and two from Awapuni, so it is not a particularly representative field. It is also the smallest of the day, but ' it will not lack interest, as the issue looks open atid there is the well-bred colt Heritage to make his debut. Time for a Turn.

It is fifteen years since the last win of the blue and gold chequers of the Clifford livery in the Wellington Stakes, but with Bun Fight this year there are good prospects for breaking the run of outs. The winner on t'be last occasion was Moorfowl and she was a two-year-old, being followed home by two others of the same age in Right and Left and Gasbag. Moorfowl’s win was'accomplished under the full 141 b. penalty.

May be Good Enough. Mr. T. A. Duncan has yet to win a WeTlington Stakes, and he is' trying this year With his recent purchase, Limulus. Liinulus Ims won only one race, and has run second in another this season, while her whole experience includes only another outing as a two-year-old, but she is a very smart and promising filly ; indeed, it is not too much to say that, despite her lack of outstanding form, she might trouble the two-year-olds next week.

Should Get Seine M4|nej'. H. and A. Cutts have seven horses in preparation for Trentham. Five of them are well forward, as a result of their holiday racing. Fracas. Knock Out, Bun Fight, and Hororata were winners, while Rocket is due to win very soon. The other two, Silly Owl and Buck Thrust, have done no racing this season, but they may not be long before they are in the money.

Far Trentham. The Te Awnmutu trainer. A. Cook, is bringing Galilee and Namakia to Trentham and he intends to leave with his charges before the end of the week. Galilee is to contest the Wellington Stakes, in which she will be ridden by L. J. Ellis. Namakia will be a competitor in the open sprint events, and will be piloted by Cook’s apprentice, G. Cameron, who has been riding very successfully lately. Beau Gallanie.

All hopes of Beau Gallante being able to race again have not yet been banished, as he has engagements at Trentham next week. He bad his last start nearly two years ago, after which he made a trip to Melbourne, where he was injured in training, through putting a foot in a bole. Well Seasoned.

As Spiral has had plenty o£ racing over the past live months to fit him for the mile and a half journey in the Wellington Cup, his track’ operations are being confined to steady work and a few smart sprints. He was accompanied by -Midian on Saturday over six furlongs after going once round at a steady pace. Though not extended at any stage of the journey, Spiral registered 1.18 2-5.

Promising Colts. Messrs. .Smith Bros.’ Eulogy colt in 'l'. R. George’s stable has been named Le Grand. No further application has been made for a name for the half-brother to Peter Jackson and Gaine Carrington, by Siegfried, for whom The Viking was disallowed, being already in existence. These two youngsters are beginning to sprint along in their work. The Siegfried colt is entered at Wanganui at the end of tile month. Rider Suspended. After the running of the Ngatea Hack Handicap on Saturday, the judicial coins mitte of the Thames Jockey Club held an inquiry regarding interference with Tybalt and Blandford. As a result'the lightweight, L. Clifford, rider of Gay Rose, who dead-heated for first with Lady Zinnia, was suspended for two months.
