Noises at Night
Sir, —Quite a deal has been written about the alleged nuisances caused in residential areas by the barking of dogs at night. As a dog owner and one who lias had trouble with a neighbour because 1 keep a dog 1 have come to the conclusion that if a person is one who dislikes dogs any shortcomings of the dog in its behaviour will be magnified and exaggerated. I do not like to have a sleepless night, and if my dog shows any sign of being noisy 1 promptly take measures to quieten it not only for my neighbours sake, but also for my own. The same neighbour, who will complain if a dog barks because it sees a rat or a hedgehog, has no compunction about keeping his radio going at all hours of the night, or of clumping about the house, slamming doors, opening and shutting _ windows, shouting noisy farewells to visitors departing, and disturbing my rest. You can divide people into three classes m this dog noise controversy, those who are dog lovers, those who dislike dogs and can see no good in them, and, lastly, the great majority, those who are tolerant and are content to let others alone so long as they do not interfere with them. —I am, etc.. LIVE AND LET LIVE. Wellington. January 15.
