GREAT SCOUT HIKE
Long Walk Through Bush
Melbourne, January 10.
The greatest Scout hike in the history of Australia ended to-day when 650 boys from the Centenary Jamboree, including 16 New Zealanders, in charge of Rover Gilmour, of Te Awamutu, arrived at Gilwell Park, Gembrook, the Victorian Scouts’ training centre in the ranges, 46 miles from Melbourne. The boys have hiked across country from Frankston through wild forest country, taking four days. In a message from his camping place last night Gilmour said: “This has been the best part of a fine jamboree. I would have come for this alone. The only thing which spoilt to-day was the fact that we have not. seen a snake, though we killed four yesterday.” The New Zealanders admired bird life in the Victorian bush.
To-night the Scouts gathci for a special ceremony round the camp fire. Lord Baden-Powell will be present.
