The team to take part against the Australian and English athletes at the Centenary Games, to be held in Melbourne at the end of the present month, is now finalised, aud comprises J. B. McFarlane, G. F. Broadway, C. H. Matthews, L. McLachlan, F. Shaiipley, and, T. J. Crowe. These six, with H. K. Brainsby. were tne original choice of the New Zealand selectors, Messrs. A. C. Kitto and J. K. Maloney. ’The Victorian association on learning the personnel of the team cabled back asking for six only, and as Brainsby was not available their wish was complied with, and no harm was done to anybody. . As walking races were included, in Lie programme, and as the Hawke's Bay centre was prepared to find the finance to send I. Driscoll, the N.Z.A.A.A. selected him as a member of the team. The Team's Manager. Without consulting tlie full council, the administrative committee of the N.Z.A.A.A. took it on themselves to appoint a manager for the team, and after a hurried scout round the choice fell on Mr. H. L. Towers, secretary of the Auckland centre. Mr. Towers is very little known in this part of the island, but he has done good work up in the Auckland district, especially in fostering the come-back of athletics and in keeping it on a higher plane thau ever before. Though there may be many with prior claims, Mr. Towers will undoubtedly uphold the prestige of our sport, and should prove a capable manager. The team will now leave Wellington on the Wanganella on January 17, returning about February 11. Electric Light Meetings. Once again electric light meetings are to be staged on the Basin Reserve,, and the first will take place to-morrow. This gathering wjll. be the triangular contest between the Wellington, Kiwi and Wanganui clubs, and judging by the excellent entries received the meeting should be well worth seeing. The Wanganui dub is sending down more than 20 athletes, including the past New Zealand champion cyclist, J. Wade, and their local champion, C. Hansen. Frank Grose, always popular in Wellington, is making the trip lip. from Christchurch to compete, mid after the form he showed at the last British Empire Games, should keep the opposition busy. Three scratch match races are included in the programme, and the riders selected are: F. Grose (Canterbury), J. Wade and C. Hansen (Wanganui), T. McCord (Wairarapa), T. Roe (Petone), R. Ulmer, L. Roberts. O. Disley, A. Pennington, and L. Sowerby (Wellington). It is many years since such talent has met in competition, and some great racing is assured. “Tim” Crowe, who has been selected to represent the Dominion at Melbourne, will now be able to compete, and in his special event, the high jump, should clear at least 6ft.
W. J. Fitzsimmons (second in both national sprint championships), J. M. Watt (second in 440vds. New Zealand championship), W. Ogg (local 880yds. chanupon), and C. Robinson (junior champion), will also be competing. The women’s events have filled better than usual, and the entries include Miss Thelma Kench, Miss M. Nelligan, Miss D. Hurley, and Miss A. George, all wellknown.sprinters. The meeting will commence with a grand parade of athletes at 7.45 p.m., and conclude about 10 p.ui. On the Sunday the visitors will be entertained by the local clubs at a picnic to be held at Pahautanui,

Each alternate gathering will comprise all scratch events,. Instead of giving trophies to the winners points will be allotted, and at the end of the season those gaining most points will receive a trophy. The competitors will be graded into A, B and C grades. The cyclists have been asked to co-operate. A. R. Wilson, Wbangarei, has now found out that iu reality be is a threemiler. In a trial heid last week he is credited with breaking 15min. Wilson missed his opportunity of inclusion in the New Zealand team by refusing to run a trial with C. H. Mathews, of Canterbury. Entries for the Masterton club’s meeting close to-day. t The afternoon meetings controlled oy the Old Boys’ club are proving well worth while and becoming more popular each rime. Last Saturday was an ideal day for sport, and some good performances were put up. The next meeting will be held on Jarnia i'v 22. The Wellington centre has applied for the use of the Basin Reserve on February 16 (provincial championships) and February 23 (proposed English team visit). The Wairarapa sub-centre will stage a sports meeting at Masterton on Sattifday. February 9. At this gathering Wellington athletes will be represented 'n large numbers, as the local centre is arranging and paying for transport., M. Furlong, the popular captain or the Kiwi chib, has been temporarily transferred to Lyttelton . Members of the Wellington and Kiwi eliilis who intend milking the trip to Wanganui on January 26 are requested to hand in their names immediately. To-morrow the first Dew.'r Shield meeting will take place at Petone. Entries close to-day. Club secretaries should, see that their club entries are put in to time. Taking as a guide the number of coni' petitors registered in this city, one would expect double the entries for meetings. Competitors 10-da.v are lacking in keenness and forgetting all about club spirit. The Otaki club's programme is to hand. Entries close on January 12.
