Rain Interferes With Hutt Valley Tournaments

While gardeners and farmers in the Hutt Valley and Eastbourne, as well as many residents, whose household water supply has been depleted, have welcomed the break in the weather, several sportsmen are disappointed that the rain did not hold off for another day or two, for the change has considerably upset their programmes. The east harbour tennis tournament, at Muritai, which opened on Saturday, was held up on Tuesday afternoon, when the rain commenced, and no further matches could be played until yesterday afternoon. Then only a few were got off. The tournament originally was expected to finish . on New Year’s Day, but present indications point to its finishing not before Friday. Even a worse fate has attended the Hutt Valley bowling tournament, which was called off after the second round had commenced on Tuesday afternoon. That round was abandoned and the programme w r as amended for yestejdgy—five games of 13 heads, with a time limit of one hour and threequarters. Hain yesterday morning prevented play, and in the afternoon when it cleared bowlers still could not use the greens. If the weather is suitable to-day the programme as amended will be carried out. There was also no play on the Eastbourne rinks yesterday.
