STERN STRUGGLE IN LAST SET

The first international triangular tennis tournament played in Australia was commenced tp-dav between Britain. France and Australia. The weather was cool, and the courts damp. The singles were the best of three.sets, and the doubles the best of five. Results are:— J. 11. Crawford (Australia) defeated J. Brugnon (France). 6-2, 6-1. (1. P. Hughes (Britain) defeated C. Boussns (France), 6-3, 6-2. V. McGrath (Australia) defeated F. J. Perry (Britain).’6-1, 6-8. 11-9. Crawford and McGrath defeated Brugnon and Boussns, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. In the Perry-McGrath match the Englishman was erratic in the first set, trying to make winners from difficult shots. Perry won the first game of the match, then McGrath took nine in a row. Perry was not handling the Australian’s services confidently, but broke through at 5-6 in the second set.
The third set was a battle of tactics. McGi'ath slowed up the game, worrying Perry with a high-bounding ball on the Englishman’s backhand. McGrath led 3-1. then Perry won four in a row for a 5-3 lead, but McGrath, playing very accurately, evened at 5-5, Perry led at 6-5 and 7-6, and McGrath at 8-7, when he liad match point. Perry was ahead at 9-8, but McGrath then played brilliantly to win three games for the match.
The Crawford-Brugnon contest was .a one-sided affair, the Frenchman being badly out of toueji. The same thing applied to the Hughes-Boussus match.
Crawford ■ and McGrath volleyed superbly in the doubles, but the Frenchmen were again below par.
MENZEL BEATS BROMWICH

I> international tennis matches here to-day Menzel (Czechoslovakia) defeated Bromwich, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2; Quist defeated Stefan! (Italy), 6-2, 6-2;. ■Turnbull defeated Maier (Spain), 6-3, 6-4; Quist and Bromwich .defeated Menzel and Stefani, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4. Menzel was subdued and his play solid. Bromwich was weak in serving. The umpire held up play, instructing a small boy to restrain his laughter. The lad crept under a seat Menzel then ordered a ball boy to stand still. ’■•i PLAY AT LAUNCESTON. Exhibition Matches (Received December 20, 11.10 p.m.) Launceston, December 20. Visiting international tennis players played exhibition games here to-day. Results are:— Kay and Miss Dearman (England.) defeated Ewin and Miss Lyle (England), 9-7; Malcolm and Kirby (South Africa) defeated Ewin and Kay, 9-5; Misses Dearman and Lyle defeated Miss Round (England) and Mrs. Malcolm, 5-4; Kay defeated Malcolm, 9-6; Miss Round defeated Miss Lyle, 6-4: . Kirby defeated Ewin, 9-6; Kirby ami Miss Round defeated Malcolm and Mrs. Malcolm, 9-4.
MATCH AT SYDNEY
' New Zealand University Players

Sydney, December 20.
The 2few Zealand University tennis players met Sydney University to-day in fine weather. Results are:—
' J. McCarthy (New Zealand) defeated B. Mathieson, 6-3, 6-3. H. Barnett (New Zealand) defeated J. Spence, 6-1, 6-0. L. King (Sydney) defeated B. Barrer (New Zealand), 6-3, 6;2. Bonnette defeated Young (New Zealand), 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. In the doubles Spenge and King defeated Young and McCarthy, 6-4, 1-6. 6-2; Mathieson and Bonnette defeated Barrer and Barnett, 6-1, 7-5. Each side has thus won two singles but Sydney won both doubles. The match continues to-morrow. Barnett showed impressive form, defeating the promising junior Spence and losing only one game.
