A Wanganui resident who returned from a visit to America last week gave a reporter an idea of how quickly things are done in California. The visitor was toll! to watch a vacant lot in one of the suburbs. It was a bumpy section, but this was levelled and a bouse soon began to take shape. In four days the house was roinpleted and the I’nniilv had moved in. three weeks had elapsed trees and slirnus were growing, there was a nice greeti lawn, and tliere were rambling roses around the door. Everything had been transplanted. This recalls the movie star who longed for a home where she could hear the wind sighing through pine trees. She could not afford to wait for 20 years for the trees to grow, so had them transplanted from a forest at enormous cost. The trees grew. When the Prince of Wales visited the States some years ago, a barren and unbeautiful street was on the route mapped out for him. The civic authorities got to work, however, and when the Prince passed along the thoroughfare there were nnlms waving in the breeze, flowers blazing in neat, plots, anil strips of green turf to rest the eyes of the Royal visitor.
