GAS OVEN SUICIDE
Man’s Pathetic Letter A verdict of suicide was returned yesterday by the coroner, Mr. E. Gilbertson, at the inquest on Albert James Maurice, aged 27, who was found at his butcher’s shop in Riddiford Street with his head in a gas oven. He had apparently been suffering from mental depression due to financial embarrassment.
Giving evidence, Constable J. L. Graham stated that he had visited deceased's shop to investigate a gas leak, following a complaint from the Gas Company. He had found deceased, who was a single man. lying with his head in the oven; there was a strong smell of gas.
A letter, found near the accused, lead as follows: — “I am in debt and cannot see my way clear, so this is the only way out. It is no doubt a coward’s way, but there are some I hope who will remember rhat I tried to live a decent life.”
