THE RACING WORLD

FEILDING OPENS Passion Fruit’s Cup SPRINT TO CULLUS Sanguine King’s Fourth on Encl (By 'Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Feilding, November 30. The spring meeting of the Feilding Jockey Club opened to-day in fine, sultry weather. Several scratchings during the day reduced the fields, but they were still sufficiently large to produce three dividends in all but the concluding event, the system of betting being the single pool with three dividends in fields of nine or more. The races during the day were, with one or two exceptions, won decisively. Passion Fruit won the Feilding Cup, and Cullus took the Flying, the double thus , going to Hawke’s Bay, while the East Coast was also represented by two other winners in Pakanui and Hatuma. The other open event was won by the locallyowned and trained Sanguine King, who scored his fourth successive win. The track was hard and fast. Thq attendance was large for an off day, there being a slight increase in the gates, and the totalisator investments were £9537 against £9427 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £llO. Easy Win in Hurdles. King Thomond scored an easy win in the Hurdle Bace. He was always well placed and taking charge half a mile from home ran home well clear of his field. Ythan, Cotsfield, and Sunny Song were the pacemakers, with King Thomond, Itichfield, Jayson, and Manawatu best placed of the others, Sandy Dix in the rear. King Thomond went up to the front down the back and took sole charge round the home turn, increasing his lead to the post, where Manawatu had run past the others. He had no chance of getting to the winner, but he beat Jayson decisively, with Chile fourth, followed by Cotsfield and Sunny Song. This was the winner’s first hurdle race, • and he jumped and won well. 'He carried 21b. overweight. Ho was schooled when trained by R. E. Hatch at Awapuni, but he is now in the stables of L. G. Morris. Manawatu, Jayson, and Chile all ran good races. Sandy Dix was well back throughout the running and when moving up through the field crashed at the last fence. Favourites Routed. Favourites were routed in the Trial Plate, in which a fairly well-backed candidate in Aussie Ra just won from an outsider, State Bank. Aussie Ra and State Bank were always fairly handy, Martianess cutting out the pace to the straight from Alby, Aussie Ra, Leith, and State Bank. Once in the straight Martianess weakened and Aussie Ra drew out. but was challenged by State Bank. In a flat-out finish Alissie Ra kept his lead in front. Hard Times came from the ruck for a moderate third, with Alby fourth, then Gay Boy, Leith, Martianess, Kentucky Song,

and Colossal. Cynola got left after playing up and breaking away. The winner is Australian bred, and was formerly in the stable of R. Barlow : be is now trained by R. Johnson. State Bank, a brother to Rerepai, showed substantial improvement on any previous form. Leith, the favourite, had every chance. Martianess and Alby showed paee. Gay Boy, a well-backed second favourite, was well back early, but finished fifth.

Solid Finishing Run.

Passion Fruit took the Feilding Cup very decisively with a solid finishing ruu. Ho was well placed throughout the running on the outside of Plateau, in behind the leaders Aga Khan and Stitch. Once in the straight Aga Khan weakened and Passion Fruit finished strongly to win comfortably. Rust came from the back to cut out Aga Khan for second, with Stitch fourth, then Plateau, Eminent, and True Shaft. The result proved the value of Riecarton form through Vintage and Sweet Agnes. Rust ran a good race. Aga Khan, the favourite, failed to run out, but he may-have been troubled by Stitch taking him on in front all the way. Led All the Way. Cullus led all the way in the Flying Handicap and showed too much speed for his opponents. The Tiger, Hunting Lodge, Porotiti, and Burnish followed Cullus to the straight. Here The Tiger was beaten, and Hunting Lodge threw out a challenge. _ It was a fruitless effort, Cullus holding on to his lead without difficulty. Hunting Lodge beat Porotiti only by a head, with Burnish, fourth, followed by Inflation, Grand Jury, Navaho, and Bodyline. CulluS never looked like getting caught. The Tiger proved a false favourite. Inflation ran a fine ra<;e, on which he should improve if be starts, but he pulled up very tender. Grand Jury was another to run very well. Burnish ran a fair race, but is not yet up to her best. A Solid Colt. Pakanui was well backed to beat the favourite, Severe, in the Juvenile Stakes, and, jumping away well, led all the way. Severe lay third early, Bias taking up second place. Seven} moved up entering the straight, but, running a little wide, did net-give herself the best opportunity to stretch out after the leader. She was going well at the finish, but could not reach Pakanui. Alchemic was a moderate third, with Going Gay fourth, followed by Bias, and then a gap to Matrimony and Sergia. Pakanui is a solid-looking tbit, with plenty of pace. Severe was not disgraced. They stood out from the others, but Alchemic, Going Gay and llias ran good races. <

Won Decisively.

With Cuddle and Cherry King out of the hack distance event, Black Man was seized upon as a good thing, and, well placed about fourth all the way, he won decisively. Eka Tere and Miss Hushabye, and later Miss Hushabye alone, made the paee from Waipiro, Black Man, Blue Boy and Boudoir. Miss Hushabye weakened in the striaght and Black Man ran on for a Comfortable win, Blue Boy beating Miss Hushabye just as decisively. Boudoir was fourth and Royal Banquet next, and then a gap to the bunch headed by Inveresk, Lord Moutoa, Lapel and Davistock.

4 Black Man had no difficulty over the concluding stages. Several lost their chances through some scrambling at the start, among them being Davistock.

Palm, favourite for the hack sprint, was always well back in the running and was never dangerous. Land Tax and Gold Gleam streaked away in front ami cut cncli other’s throats, both stopping badly in the straight, where Hatuma moved up. Land Tax failed to keep in front of Hatuma’a ohnblenge. Gold Gleam was third and Merry Way fourth, then Silk Sox, Secrecy, Palm, Jubilee Sor.g and Flamingo. •Saved at all in the running, Laud Tax would have won. Palm got a bad passage. Fourth On End. Sanguine King made it four on end when he won the concluding event, for which he was a warm favourite. He was always out. in front with Farmer, with Pomp handy. Pomp came at. him in the straight, but Sanguine King held on and won well. Pesehiera, Sunny Sky and Copper King made up a lot of ground at the finish to be clo-se up at the post all beating Farmer home. The winner is in first-clues form at present. HORSES FOR NORTH Riccarton Notes and Comments Arrangements have been made to send Southdown on to Ellerslie after the Royal welcome'meeting at Treutham in charge of J. S. Shaw, who will be going north with Rebel Star, Sea Eox. and probably Maroha. Southdown's trainer, A. McAulay, will travel south with a team comprising Sam Smith. Theatin, and Hostile. It is interesting to record that last year, Shaw took Minerva 1 to Ellerslie for F. Holmes, and was in charge of him when he won the Auckland Cup. For England. Te Nira, the two-year-old sister to Phar Lap recently sold for 2000giis„ was sent back to the Eldcrslie Stud tins week, to be further handled and exercised to prepare her for her trip to England, which will probably commence on January 3. Impressive Work. The fastest gallop recorded at Riccarton on Thursday was credited to Gaysomc, who reeled off five furlongs in 1.1. the last three in 37. She will be ridden to-day by H. Mackinnon, who will claim a 31b. allowance, bringing her weight, down to 7.10. Form points to the prospects of Rebel Chief in this race, but he will be fully extended to concede Gaysomc 131 b. Another Good Effort. Another impressive gallop was registered by Sam Smith and Ranelagh. who covered six furlongs in 1.14 2-5. the last three In 37 1-5, Sam Smith doing the better work at the finish. Before the gallop Ranelagh was given some jumping in the schooling ring. He is a natural jumper, and gives every indication of developing into a high-class performer over the battens. Oil' the Scene. Custodian is to be put aside for a few months, and during his spell, it is likely that he will be gelded. His owner, Mr. 0. N. Draper, of Dunedin, who has just returned from a world tour, was at Riecarton on Thursday, and after a consultation with his trainer, this decision was made.

SPLENDID ENTRIES

For Royal Meeting FIELDS FOR TRENTHAM The Dominion’s Best Nominations for the Wellington Racing Club s Royal Welcome Meeting, to be held at Trentbam on Saturday, December .10, closed last evening. In the aggregate there are 202 entries for the seven races on the card, which gives an average of just under 29 horses) per race, a verysatisfactory response from the club’s point of view, though uot unexpected in V i le u' liberal prizes with which the club endowed each of the events. The smallest field is that entered for the Treutham Stakes, a three-year-old event ruu over a mile, which has drawn eight entries. However, the list contains the names of those who matter—Sporting Llood. the Derby winner, Synagogue, Gay Blonde, the crack Auckland three-year-old, and Natnakia. who was beaten by Gay Blonde in the Avondale Guineas, but subsequently showed exceptional brilliance to win the Takapuna Hack Plate, of one mile. The meeting of these four three-year-olds, providing they all accept, will provide the race of the season as far as it has run. There are 35 entries for The Duke of Handicap, which carries a prize of £7OO, including a handsome gold cup presented by Mr. W. Higgins, a steward of the Wellington Racing Club. The entries include Gay Marigold, the Alison Cup winner, Kiltowyu, winner of the open handicap on the second day of the Takapuna meeting and regarded as an Auckland Cup prospect, Hazoor and Might, two of the unlucky runners in the New Zealand Cup, Red Manfred and Spiral, two classic winners as three-year-olds, Solarium, the Mitchelson and Avondale Cup winner and ruling favourite for the Auckland Cup, and Vintage, winner of the Fendalton and Metropolitan Handicaps at the Canterbury Jockey Club's New Zealand Cup and Derby meeting. The Dominion’s best sprinters have entered for the Bledisloe Stakes, including the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap winner. Silver Ring, Star Artist, a present strong fancy for the Auckland Railway Handicap. Golden Wings, Grand Sport, winner c/f the C..T.C. Stewards’ Handicap, and Rebel Chief and Rebel Star, two of the star performers of the New Zealand Cup meeting. The two-year-old handicap, the Balmoral Stakes, did not attract Galilee, considered the beet two-year-old seen so far this season, but Fairfax, whom many seasoned judges believe will ultimately establish juvenile supremacy, has been entered. Others among the 27 nominated are winners in Bu.n Fight. Haunt Monde, Kotou. Legatee, Pakanui. Penelope, Round Up. Severe (the Wellesley Stakes winner). Silver Coat and Triune.
