DUKE OF GLOUCESTER INDISPOSED
Chill Develops Overnight DAY’S ENGAGEMENTS CANCELLED By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received November 2, 5.55 p.m.) Melbourne/November 2. As ihe result of a chill which developed overnight in his train, the Duke of Gloucester remained in bed in the train to-day near Colac. This necessitated the cancelling of his engagements to-day. The Duke is suffering from catarrh, but his general condition is satisfactory. lie was due to-day to picuic at Otway forest, and from there proceed to Lome, a coastal resort, afterward travelling over the Ocean Road toward Geelong. The Duke’s regretful message to those concerned said it was with the greatest reluctance that he had taken the advice and cancelled the visit. He wished to convey his regret to the people at the disappointment and inconvenience caused them. The Duke’s indisposition was probably caused by the recent extremes of temperature. At Mildura it was 100 degrees, and at Colac last night 40 degrees. To-morrow’s programme is uncertain, and the Duke may miss the Henley regatta, Melbourne’s famous river carnival. The Ballarat Visit. A blackwood casket containing three gold nuggets was presented to the Duke on his arrival in the historic city of Ballarat, from Mildura, as a reminder of the important part gold has played in the early distory of Victoria. The Duke was particularly interested in Ballarat’s war memorial, taking the form of an avenue of honour, containing 3900 trees, each delicated to a soldier who served in the war.
Bands attending the South Street Centenary Band Contests assisted in the civic welcome at the city Oval. After the Duke declared the contest open, the Woolston (New Zealand) and the Melbourne Fire Brigades’ Bands demonstrated a quickstep. None applauded more heartily than the Duke the haka by members of the Woolston Band after the march past.
