A memorial which the Japanese Ambassador unveiled recently at Gillingham, in Kent, celebrates William Adams, who was born there. lie was the first Englishman to visit Japan. Going to that country in 1(400, he was for twenty years the compulsory guest, of the Sboguu. The Japanese gave him ah estate, and in modern times they raised a monument to him.
