Labour; Amendment Rejected by 37 Votes to 29 SEARCH FOR NEW MARKETS OVERSEAS By a margin of eight votes the House of Re P . rejected yesterday the Labour Party’s amendment to refuse a second reading to the Agriculture (Emergency Powers) Bill, which gives effect to some of the major recommendations of the , Dairy Industry Commission, including the establishment of a Executive Commission of Agriculture and the reconstitution of the Dairy Produce Board. Twenty-nine votes were cast for the amendment and 37 against. The only vote for the amendment was Mr. W. J..Polson (Stratford). A the Independents voted with the Opposition Urgency was taken for the second reading of the Bill, the division on the amendment in the late afternoon was followed by more second reading speeches. Those who participated m the debate included the Prime Minister, Rt Hon. G. W. Forbes. He spoke in support of the establishment of the proposed Commission of Agriculture and pointed out that this organisation would explore new markets and work in close co-operation with the various produce boards. It had been said such a board was to be given great powers, but these would only be used in case of emergency. New Zealand was faced with regulation of the United Kingdom market, and such an organisation would be in a position to deal in an orderly. manner with production and marketing in this country. - •
