BRITISH BY-ELECTION

Labour Wins at Swindon London, October 26. The Swindon. by-election to replace Sir R. Mitchell Banks, K.C. (Conservative), who has been appointed to a judgeship, resulted as follows:— Rt. Hon. C. Addison (Labour) 20,902 W. W. Wakefield (C-on.) 18,523 Mr. Wakefield was at one time well known as an International Rugby footballer, and has captained England, Cambridge University, Middlesex, the Royal Air Force, and Harlequins.

At the 1931 election the following was: Sir R. M. Banks, 22,756; the Rt. Hon. C. Addison, 17,962. On that occasion the. Conservative candidate reversed the decision of- the 1929 election, when the Rt. Hon. C. Addison had a majority of 2161. Mr. F. C. Thornborough, a Liberal, also contested the seat in 1929.
