Palmerston North Square (From "The Dominion,October 28, IDOD.) The last section of the Palmerston Square to be beautified wae opened yesterday afternoon by the . Mayor, Mr, J. A. Nash. The event attracted a large crowd of people and great interest was manifested in the good work carried out by the council. This portion is known as the observatory section of the square and comprises two lakelets. In one of these all sorts of acquatic plants are to be grown, while the other portion will be devoted to waterfowl. The Mayor turned on the water, which entered the lake through a rockery, and the Mayoress cut a ribbon stretched across the rustic bridge connecting the two lakelets. A little girl, Miss Allman, let loose two hybrid ducks, and Mr. D. Thomas two black swans on the lake.
Mr. Joseph Chamberlain, now 72 years of age, is in London, where he will remain during the Parliamentary crisis. His health is maintained. He recently interviewed several leading politicians. [lt was the eve of an important by-election.]
A peculiar recognition has been offered of the efforts of tie Hon. James Carroll. The Maoris of a certain district in the Wairarapa are erecting a new church which they expect to open about the middle of next month. In connction with this ceremony they have sent an invitation to "Mr. Carrol] asking if he will accept the position of honorary |>ishop of tfee Native Chnrch of New Zealand I
