FIGHTING FROST

Methods in Central Otago

An explanation of what was being done by State departments to combat destructive frosts in fruit-growing districts, was given yesterday by the Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. R. Masters, in reply to the Hon. G. J. Anderson (Wellington). In 1928-1929 the Department of Scientific Research conjointly with the Department of Agriculture carried out Investigations in Central Otago, using several new heating materials which were claimed to give better results than those in general us£. The Meteorological Office issued special forecasts to fruit-growers in Central Otago when destructive frosts appeared to be approaching. Tests of new alarm mechanism had been made, but no apparatus showed Improvement on that in general use. Tlie Californian method of burning crude oil Ip snfttll pails had proved most successful. This had been found to be the cheapest and simplest means of frost-fighting compatible with the highest efficiency. It was doubtful, however, whether heating would ever overcome the risks in orchards located in districts particularly susceptible to heavy frosts.
