SERIES OF LONG AIR RACES LIKELY
Possible American Contest OFFICIAL TO RECOMMEND ONE By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright (Received October 26, 7.50 p.m.) London, October 26. Sir Macpherson Robertson has evidently inaugurated a series of air races which has spread throughout the world. The “Sun-Herald” cable agency learns that Mr. Rex Martin, assistantdirector of the United States Bureau of Air Commerce, who is at present visiting Britain, will, on his return, recommend that America hold an international air race in 1935, starting from New York, thence down the Atlantic coast to Patagonia, returning via the Pacific coast, thence via Canada and finishing at New York. Tasmania has decided to organise an air race, and has issued an offer . of £lOOO in prizes and a share of all profits to competitors in the centenary race. Sir Macpherson Robertson has given £5OO. Details of the race are not completed. A committee at Brisbane is organising a special air race between Melbourne and Brisbane, and is endeavouring to attract the pilots who competed in the centenary race. INTERNATIONAL RACE Intention in France (Received October 26, 7.50 p.m.) Paris, October 26. The Minister of Air announces that France will shortly organise a big in-' ternational air competition. “Le Soir” emphasises' that the proposed French air race is due to disappointment that French planes and pilots did not compete in the Australian race. It expresses the opinion that it will probably be held from Paris to Saigon and back at the end of 1935. RACE ACROSS TASMAN Christchurch Inquiries Christchurch, October 26. The Canterbury Aero Club has decided to support a proposal to try to promote an air race from Melbourne to Christchurch. A cablegram has been sent to the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr. D. GNSullivan, M.P., w’ho is at present in Melbourne, asking him to get Into communication with the aviation authorities and see whether, in the event of the club raising £2OOO prize-money, sufficient entries would be received to make a race worth while.
